N gauge dc layout im working on, finished the scenics and laid the track. Loosely based on the goods yard where I lived in the late 70’s. Just the wiring under the baseboard to finish off led lights in the buildings.

Hi Gray (sorry, don't know your real name) and :welcome: to the club.

Looks like you've managed to cram a lot in a small space, well done, looks good :thumbs3:

I see you have a shelf layout as well Gray, so do you like to model many small layouts rather than one big one?

Hi. I am limited for space that’s why I did the small layouts. I mainly make small dioramas using diecast vehicles as the theme.

You can't just post a string of photos like that and walk away Graham - we need information !!

You told Ed you build "diorama" type layouts and I can see some similarities between this and your shelf layout - are some elements inter-changeable ?

Second question - does/did Mumps Mill exist in Oldham or is it reflection of a childhood disease ………………………….?

Third - I note the buildings came from the Metcalfe stable but not so sure about the factory windows on the backscene - is that a Scalescenes print ?

And finally (for now) - what are the fuel storage tanks ?  They look excellent.

Hi, they wouldn’t be interchangeable because my dioramas are mostly 1/76 scale or 1/43.  Mumps is the are that I have modelled, mumps mill was real and the area contained the Oldham train station and the goods yard extended from there with lots of mills and factories. although most of it was demolished in the late 70’s. The train station survived into the 2000’s until they built the tram station. The buildings are metcalfe and the backdrop is print outs of the original area and station, the sides are scale scenes that came free in a railway magazine ( which I also used on my shelf layout) and I made the corrugated pieces from cardboard painted silver and rust colour. The fuel storage tank was an e liquid bottle painted green with a red paper clip and plastic for the pipes. The other tank was off the back of a kids plastic tractor and trailer given the same treatment with paint and bits of plastic for pipes.  IMG_5372.jpeg IMG_5377.jpeg

Ps the yellow oil tank was an n gauge container painted and the pipes are just bits of plastic sprue that I save for such things. The lettering is self adhesive 4 mm letters on a sheet from eBay. The BP signs are just images from google that I put into a word document and scale down then printed and glued on.

IMG_3317.jpeg Pps. They could be interchangeable because they are both n gauge.
The dioramas are mainly 1/76 and 1/43. I’ve attached a Fred dibnah diorama I made last year 1/43. Not sure if it’s uploaded.

Thanks Peter much appreciated, I’ve been making dioramas for the past few years just for something to do. I used to make airfix stuff as a kid. But I decided to complete the n gauge layout a couple of months ago, I started it in 2016 then put it in the attic where it sat for years. So I thought it’s about time I finished it off. Not much to do on it, only some scenics and a bit of wiring. But it inspired me to do the shelf layout as well ( which is on a floating shelf so it slides onto the wall bracket for storage) and I made the Perspex top to slide on to keep it looking neat and clean.

There's a lot of detail in that Fred Dibnah diorama - where did you find Fred himself ?  Presumably you painted up the Land Roover in house colours yourself.

Does the steam engine still work now or is it "boiler certificate expired" ………………………:07rolleyes_2:

The Land Rover is a 1/43 scale Oxford diecast which was produced in Fred’s livery.
The figure was bought from eBay and I had to paint it.
The boiler didn’t have a certificate, I just put boiling water in it then placed a tea light candle under it to keep it boiling just to test it. Stood well back to see if it worked out of curiosity.
