Off at a tangent once more.

As gary says primer first, I also said it in post number 523

A light coat of grey primer also lets you see where the sleeper grime is going better than onto the dark plastic sleepers, and the paint takes to the primer far better than bare plastic, you may also find you don't need the sleeper grime as thick as the grey primer showing through gives the old grey wood weathered effect.

Now read the previous posts correctly before continuing….

I'm reading ……. I'm reading. Quite right as well. I can take. Telling off. No point in getting advice then not heeding it. Apologies ………. I'm focused ……. I have ordered up some primer. Well ……. A couple actually as I can see some other uses for it as well.

I'll give it a primer coat on Friday night when I get it ( assuming that it will have arrived) that'll be dry by Saturday morning and let me get on with the main event.

I'll leave the ballasting well alone until it's completely dry.

I have black ballast that I bought from the Dundee show but it is medium grade. Matt, I may take you up on some of your coal dust in Order to sprinkle on top in places to give that well tamped in look between the sleepers.

Whatcha think.

Which primer did you settle for ?

The acrylics will be dry in minutes, just make sure your well ventilated, and not smoking at the time, otherwise it may turn out smokier than you expected.

On a test picec of track, see what effect adding a little brown &/or white paint to the pva makes to the colour of your black ballast, it may just tone down the black enough to allow the coal to stand out a bit better.

Then you can blend it the way you want with the air brush.

Hi Paul,

From memoryI bought a sand colour, Matt black, dark brown and a reddish brown. So, there are plenty of opportunities there Ithink.

The track rust will be done with a small brush. I may also pick out some of the sleeper chairs with it as well.

One bucket of coal dust set aside. You can sieve out the larger bits to use as loads for your wagons

( got some set aside for you as well Paul )   Anyone else want some via Warley just shout ! . . . ( Its OK Tom I have some 1.5ltr screw lid plastic containers so you won't be traveling down with half a ton of nutty slack loose in yer boot ):mutley:mutley:mutley

Toto, you can always dust the ballast with different coloured weathering powders, after the ballast has dried ofcourse… ;-) Then again, if you are looking for that hard packed look in the ballast, use fine sand or ash from a fire place for ballast. :thumbs

Cheers, Gary.

A phone call from SWMBO last night to say my spray paints have arrived. Good news. Guess what I'll be doing this weekend then.

Hi Ed,

The spraying will just be done " in shed " unless it's dry enough to take the layout  outside. It's just short bursts really so with the shed doors open it'll be fine.

The weather generally up here ain't great either but I don't think we can expect much better for November.

I'll post up some pictures as things happen. Friday is not that far away.

Cheers

Toto.

Ed, remember this is Scotland, it's not whether it's raining, it's which direction and if it's horizontal.
Toto, if its solvent based paint, take deep breaths, after all its cheaper than fags :mutley

Hi Paul,

I will do. My lungs are goosed anyway so a bit of paint won't finish me overnight.:mutley

Should be on for a reasonably productive weekend I think. Steady away as they say.

I think it's the following weekend we are up mob handed to harass yourself and get out homework dished out so I'll make the most of this weekend.:mutley

In saying that, better confirm that with Matt.

Cheers

Hi Toto
There is always this Sunday, if it suits better, as I'm driving Saturday night so will be capable on Sunday.
By the way a decent face mask will also, if you don't want to inhale.
