Off at a tangent once more.

Hi Gormo
The magnets were not fitted long enough to permanently magnetise the rails, but did seem to reduce the effect of the magnet, having no effect on the axels at all, but also not strong enough to uncouple either  :brickwall
I will try the neodymium magnets again, but this time on the layout with the n/s track.

mmm I have some code 83 steel rails & tried it just then with a #321 and all worked OK  and of course I use 3mm Cube rare earth magnets as described http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=8481&forum_id=6  with both steel & NS rail with good success - yes, steel axles are a pain so a bit of weight helps out..

From what I recall of magnetism theory iron or steel will affect a magnetic field by concentrating the lines of force through the iron or steel thus distorting the field. The effect will depend on the amount of iron/steel and its orientation with respect to the field.

The reason  a relay solenoid has an iron core is to increase the field  to better attract the moving part, same applies for an electromagnetic uncoupler.

wonder if Gormos nails are having the same effect ? helping to concentrate the magnetec field so it effects the couplers better

( yes I AM still alive just chained to a paint brush and various other tools around the house by SWMBO  )

Nope, just 48 years working in and instructing electronics , trained on Radar in the RAF , ground crew, (you bend'em we mend'em) also a few years instructing, then more instructing in industry,  no degree just a Fellow of the Society of Electronic and Radio Technicians (about equivalent of an HNC). I reckon the RAF technical training was some of the best at the time, wouldn't know about present day I finished my 23 years back in the 70s.

Hi Mike,

An admirable record of what sounds like an enjoyable and rewarding career.

Interesting talk here about magnetism
I`m attracted to this conversation and I hope it`s one I can easily understand because some of the ideas are poles apart. You guys up North have a different way of doing things to us in the South even though we are all in a similar field of expertise. There is a wide spectrum of information available through forums like this which has an almost electromagnetic attraction for me.

Taken from Mrs Beatons 101 quotes handed to all women / girls during home ecconomics classes, or in the words of the Boss "How to train your man".

Best one I had was a James May program on hobbies, his quote was "show me a man with a hobby, and I'll show you a man not cheating on his wife". Nothing was said during the program, but as it finished I was asked if there was anything I needed for the railway - James May, my hero :mutley

Matt just use oil based gloss - 24 hours between coats, non of this acrylic stuff 2 hour drying time stuff.

Sorry Toto, I'll back on topic - eventually honest

Well,

Got home and picked up the car from its MOT. I've never been so delighted to see my car back. This trains nonsense is nae good.:mutley

Better still my Zen 6 pin decoders with harnesses and stay alive were on the door as well as the two eight pin direct decoders that I ordered for my class 08's. Result.

That could be a job for tonight. I've got about 7 decoders to fit out so hopefully I'll get these done and ready for testing on Highbridge.

Good to be home again.

Cheers

Hi Ron,

It is Zen 8 pin direct decoders. I'll post up a picture or two later tonight.

I forgot it was the dragon in laws birthday today so I nipped over with SWMBO for a visit. I'm just back in and have demolished a mince pie supper. ( diabetic friendly one of course ).:mutley

I'll post them up and let you know how they perform once I get them fitted.

The fitting will probably be tomorrow night now once I get back from Glen Dochart. We're driving up through Glen Ogle to visit some of our old caravan buddies. We are considering buying another one maybe the year after next. It depends on if we still have the dogs or not.

Cheers for now.

Toto.

Hi Ron,

photos as above,

first up the eight pin decoder

and out of the box,

The bottom doofer ( stay alive bit ) has two cables the same as the plug in bit. I am assuming that they are soldered together when you fit them. I'll read the destructions.:mutley

next up is the six pin version with stay alive,

Again in two parts with two similar coloured wires coming out of each,

So there we have it. I'll need to have a swatch through the destructions to make sure I get this right. I wouldn't imagine that its rocket science somehow.

I'll let you know how I get on and maybe post a picture or two of the installation.

cheers for now

Thanks Tom. We're out all tomorrow near Warwick at the International Astronomy Show, SWMBO has a table there selling astro related, hand made jewellery (and lots of astro goodies on show as well for me!)

Cheers

Good afternoon Toto

Hope your visit went well.

Told you I'd get back on topic

He used 22mm x 11mm x 2mm neodyium magnets, should be short enough not to effect the axels.

Even put my money where my mouth is and ordered up 10 to test
