I may have come up with a bonzer of an idea for keeping some of the layout wiring tidy ……. And …… Out of harms way. I won't expand on my eureka moment quite yet until I have investigated it a bit further first but I think it could be a winner.

:hmm

All shall be revealed, and possibly a big thanks to Matt although he doesn't know it yet. ( that'll get him thinking ).

Cheers

G`day Toto,
I think you will find your average wire coat hanger wire is too thick to insert into the tie bar hole.
I use a 1.25mm Gal Wire which is technically a tie wire for gardening or for wiring mesh to a frame etc. like this example below.
Easy to bend to shape….won`t stretch and rigid enough to bent at 90 degrees to activate a tie bar and cheap as chips….Approx.£3 in your money.

This product or something similar may be available at your B&Q possibly in the gardening dept. if they have such a thing.??

Hi Gormo,

Cheers. I may have to visit B & Q today anyway so I'll have a look. I did look for it previously there but never thought of the gardening department. Thinking is not my strong point. In fact …… I've still to find a strong point. :mutley

Cheers

Toto

PS ……. What diameter do you use ?

PPS …….. 1.25mm ……. It would help if I engaged my brain and read the post properly. Sorry.

Only problems with piano wire are cutting it - plays havoc with wire cutters, bending it can sometimes be  a problem too, try and make too sharp a bend and it can sometimes snap. Plastic tube works just as well as metal, and it's cheaper. For N gauge I'm using 2mm outside diameter tube and 1mm wire.

Oh well there's no stopping him now

So…..

How about, the Old Skool approach

Thick wire hanger or galvanised steel wire

SKIP18B BLOOMA HEAVY DUTY GARDEN WIRE 20 | DIY at B&Q

running from each side frame, then either solder a 1mm riser wire to the thick wire to operate the point, or solder the riser wire to a terminal block, this would give you some adjustment.

Just attach a knob at either end.

Now off for a lay down in as dark room after a visit from the grand kids

Heavy duty fence wire done the job …….. the kind I used as a sparky for fishing cables under the floor. Then bore out the point tie bar to suit……… like this,

As you can see, I used one of Gormos little gizmos ( the connector block innards ) to provide a bit adjustment potential.

Next up was to create some templates for land form supports.

All a bit different ( free hand ) so as to provide some subtle undulations.

And now ……….. the bit I've been waiting for, for about a year or so. the chicken wire.

I got this stuff cheaper because it didn't have no feathers. I was clucking mad so I was.

Its time for a quick bite to eat and then out with the chicken wire and possibly on to the plaster bandage. So, what's the verdict so far chaps ?

and idea's before I go any further would be good. After the horse has bolted would be bad.

cheers for now.

Chicken wire done. I haven't done the plaster bandage yet. that'll be tomorrow now. I need to look at starting to pack my case for next weekend. ( so SWMBO tells me ) anyway, a couple of photo's.

and another,

I intend to build a low brick wall along the front of the hillside fixed back to the plywood formers.

and another,

and its in its resting place for the night.

So, that's where I'm at for the moment. I am still thinking whether I want to form some kind of feature onto the hillside before I go installing the plaster bandage. I'll have to have a wee think on that one. Also, what I am going to do at the ends as I need to have an idea in case I have to build it in now.

I'll be back with any decisions etc as they happen. hope you all like it so far. Its straight of the top of my head as I go but think its heading in the right direction.

cheers

Whilst we're at it, the hunt is on for a name for this sucker. I think we know enough of what shape it's going to take.

Industrial goods shunting layout based on a warehousing and possibly light industrial ( maybe fabrication ) type small industry. It will only ever see shunters. Classes 08, 03, 04's etc.

Fill yer boots.

Chicken run ………. I ask you. Have you taken your meds today ? I hope I'm not getting subjected to that kind of low intelligence nonsense whilst trapped in a hotel room in Birmingham. ……… No where to escape to. I think some industrial strength ear plugs could be the order of the day. ……. It's not right……….. Always me …….. Why ……….

Thank you Gormo.

A much better and sensible option. Go to the top of the class. Pole position so far. Unlike Matt………. Chicken run indeed.

I've ordered up some Scalescenes brick papers and a couple of industrial kits as well. I may give these a go. I'm also thinking about some etched windows etc :hmm

This is where I fall flat on my @r$e however I need to start somewhere. You guys that churn out the scenics effortlessly. Admiration does not begin to explain it. I'm a bit ham fisted when it comes to this bit but hopefully after I've tried a few hundred times I'll end up with something presentable.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers

Toto.

Thanks Toto old mate :thumbs

I must refer you to the trouble I had with these guys when I was trying to name the signal box cats.
Honestly, some of them weren`t willing to exercise their inner creativity at first, Spurno comes to mind, but eventually they came around to some excellent suggestions.
Once we got the more mundane and obvious suggestions out of the way or actually they were rejected outright, you could sense the competitiveness stirring amongst the troops. A must do better approach was adopted by all when they understood Gormo has high standards ( a bit like yourself Toto:thumbs)…..plus a couple of them were given a bit of a dressing down…..in a nice way???
So you must be patient and adopt a no nonsense approach to this subject otherwise the fellas will start chucking all sorts of basic rubbishy names at you……..stand your ground Toto and put your foot down……Insist on excellence.!!!!

:cheers  Gormo
