The new Storage turntable, on which I blew most of this years railway budget, arrived in record time from Germany
The installation was not straightforward and at one stage I thought that I had irreparably damaged a key component…….that was a very depressing moment.
Fortunately I stumbled on a couple of old threads and discovered all was not lost. Its still not working properly …..all the exit sidings still have to be relaid and wired.I then discovered last night that the the bridge has to be removed (again) so I can modify the wiring! However a satisfactory conclusion appeared to be in sight.
Then, last night, I realised that the bridge had to be removed (again) so that the wiring can be modified…grrrr
To cheer myself up I went over to the Engine Shed Turntable which worked flawlessly.
Granby Shed on a spring morning in 1948:
Wrong locos but reminds me of the atmosphere at Edgehill in the early fifties.
Regards from Vancouver where it is definitely spring and I am amazed that I am allowed to spend any time in the Railway Room

I know that these things are sent to try us, but you certainly can do without the frustration and disappointment, even though the silver lining means we get another glimpse of your shed yard and all that wonderful 40s' atmosphere :thumbs
Good to know you have a work round and when it’s all done, you can enjoy even more turntable heaven!
I share some railway disappointment myself, as my Hattons birthday package arrived at our post box last week, was too big to fit in, so the postie tried at the house where we were unusually out having our covid vaccinations, so left a note in our post box to tell us the parcel was left at the local bar/post office. They claim never to have seen it and show no interest in helping to recover it, insert expletive!!!
Loins will be girded as we travel to the big post office tomorrow in the hope of retrieving my toys!
Good luck with yours John and hopefully we’ll both be happier soon.
Best
Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Its certainly been character building!
Quite the coincidence with birthday presents…..the turntable was classified as my birthday present…to myself. Hopefully I will have it sorted by the 23rd. I do hope you locate your parcel in time for the big day. That casual approach must be absolutely infuriating.
Glad you like the black and white shots…..the ps and qualification re Edgehill was added knowing that you and Keith were likely to read it!

Sorry about the tribulations with the turntable, it must be very frustrating, but I'm sure you will conquer it.

Bill, been there done that and got just as frustrated/angry as you. Mine was back in '05 when my Lenz kit came from Vermont and was left in a post office where no one except one person cared enough to help us.
Cheers Pete.

As always Michael you are too kind nevertheless your comments are much appreciated.Super photos, John. I can almost see everything and everyone moving, it is all so realistic. It's all much more than a model railway, just perfect.

Glad you like the photos…… they were quite rushed but I must admit I was pleased with the result.
I am now reasonably confident the turntable will be ok……its just the faff of removing the bridge- you have to prise out 6 segments on each side before the bridge can be lifted out - then some rather delicate soldering …..fingers crossed

Thanks Pete……. my fingers will certainly be crossed just prior to the soldering :lol:Fingers crossed that you get round your turn table problems. Good shots too. I really should get into some scenery. I've only been testing the track for a few years.

I would encourage you to try some scenery….its very satisfying and to my mind adds to the fun and realism of operating. My problem is that I am too impatient and start ballasting and building lineside stuff before I have thoroughly proved the track running. Then I get frustrated when I have to rip it out in order to effect repairs   You would think I would know better at my age

I just lifted some track yesterday when I thought my steam loco's would benefit from a coaling stage. I downloaded the scale scenes one a couple of years ago and plan to use the plans to build it in plasticard… we'll see what a mess I make of it.

I still haven't tackled my turntable - I'm assuming your "years modelling expenditure" ended up in Mr Fleischmann's pocket ………………… As I'm in the process of rewiring most of my layout, the turntable isn't connected to anything although, if you recall, originally it turned but the bridge was dead.
Alas, your turntable tribulations take second place to another fine trio of photographs - I can never have enough of Granby and will now spend some time studying the latest offerings to look for the fine detail which you always seem to be able to include - from memory or photographs, it matters not one jot, it's there. As Michael said, it's all so incredibly real. :cheers

Hi PeterI'm absolutely with you on the frustrations of repairing bits damaged during repairs John - I must be at least 100 repairs ahead of you……………………. and my layout is only just past the embryonic stage so I have more delights to come.

Glad you enjoyed the shed photos. As I developed the layout, I didnt pay enough attention to ensuring I retained eye level photo corridors. Its now something of a challenge avoiding a series of "helicopter shots". I must admit to being quite pleased with the effect of passage/alley viewpoint.
I guess that a portion of the years budget went indirectly to Herr Fleischmann, or his successors **, but via the Detmold branch of Modellbahnshoppe-Lippe. Ordered on Good Friday, shipped Tuesday immediately after Easter and delivered in Vancouver on Friday morning! Pretty amazing….admittedly via UPS and another dent in the budget.
** Fleischmann have traveled a rocky road…..not sure who owns them now but their HO/00 track tooling has worn out and is not being replaced. There is no news if/when the turntable will go back into production……it took a lengthy internet search to locate one in Detmold. You should treasure yours it will now be worth at least double the value of any of your locos!
With my hard won expertise I can now hopefully help you get power to the bridge.
The bridge movement should be powered by an independent 12v DC transformer Black/White wires
In addition to the Black/White 12v wires the turntable will have a 5 wire ribbon Yellow,Yellow, Red, Grey, Yellow
The Red Grey and last single Yellow will be connected to the Control Switch which I think I I recall worked fine in both directions?
The first two yellow wires provide power to the bridge track. They should be treated just like droppers and connected to the DCC bus. Yellow 1 RH Rail Yellow 2 LH Rail
If you locate these two wires and connect them all should be well.

Thanks a million for the turntable wiring details John - my wires didn't seem to match with the Fleischmann diagram. Without going to check, I'm pretty sure I have a loose white wire dangling but, armed with your crib sheet, I'll see what's connected to what and do a test run - many thanks again. :thumbs
Glad to help Peter……..I will send you a PM

Thank you so much for thinking of us Michael. We have been very touched by the messages of support and kind inquiries we have received during both the heatwave and my earlier spell in Hospital.Hi John,
I have been hearing about the terrible heatwave to hit Canada, and just checking that you and yours are all well and coping with the temperatures. Stay safe and I hope we all hear from you soon.
Michael
Temperatures approaching 100o F and a health warning about air quality (stay indoors!) are less than ideal when one is convalescing. Happily I appear to have survived. Temperatures are beginning to drop and a cooling breeze is clearing the pollution.
Hopefully it will not be too long before I start boring everybody again with tales of Granby
Thank you again for your concern
Best wishes
