Hi John I've opened a thread on RMWeb in special interests GWR section on the postal coach some good bits of information have been posted from the regular band of posters there.

It seemed like I had been working on the routine fo ever…..most of the entry schedules were written and tested years ago but I kept getting messed up….and disheartened by the turntable.

The major recent issue was synchronising the point switching so that a loco going to the  east spur from coal didnt start too soon and cause a short……took a while to sort that!

I have experienced similar issues - are you points driven by the LS150 ?  I found that they were too slow to react and swapped them for some NCE decoders. I also had to extend the delay command in the schedules.

I was with the tortoise/ls150 issue for ages but like you solved it by moving a load of turnouts either to a switch 8 or mixing them up so all points on a heavily used route were not on the same Ls 150…….works pretty well but there were only two turnouts on the routine and only one was on a ls150……I may have been trying to cut it too fine shaving seconds off the delays:oops:

Change of subject …..could you remind me of the type of resistor you used on your resistive ….I think I need to install some of those micro ones thatyou were using

Hi John,As you already know, I have done a lot of modelling photography and also Photoshop stuff, most of my time when I have found time to work on my layout has been building models and scenery, I haven't spent time on it now for many months, but when I return (shortly) I think the next step for me is to get trains moving, I also want to progress from just pictures to movies.

Recently, I had to do a short music video for another forum, so I had to get a plugin to edit a few things, It was a freeby called, I think Movie Maker, very, very basic, so, my question to you, please, what video editing program would you suggest, for editing clips etc, but not too complicated as I don't want to spend all of my time just figuring out how to us it!

Hi Phil

All my videos in the last five years have been shot with either ipad or iphone. The editing app I use is called imovie…..Its a free ( I think) download from the apple store

Its quite basic but I found it pretty intuitive.

Movie Maker doesn't seem to do it for me, I get no video preview at the bottom where I can cut and paste etc and add new clips into it?

Hi John,

I have been using 10k micro resistors   -  I still have a lot of wagons to go and I have discovered that I need to put an extra loop through by DB20 detectors  :roll:

I get that with imovie but I suspect that doesnt help

I dont follow the last comment about extra loop and DB20 detectors?

Could I ask where you got your resistors……they seem inexpensive but the min qty I have seen is far too high….it would last me to 2030……and I doubt that I will be around then:sad:

Are these just diodes you're looking for John ?

I have some quite small ones I used with the LS150 and Tortoise motors.  If memory serves me right, I had to buy 100 which will last me until 2031 !!  I could post some over if they're of any use ………………..

Thats very kind of you but I am looking for micro resistors which are very very small rectangles which can be stuck to a wagon or carriage axle and connected live with silver paint……conventional resistors that I normally use foul the brake gear on some of the newer carriages.

Just more stuff to make sure RR&co knows where everything is!:roll:

I received a surprise but very welcome Christmas Gift:

"An Historical Survey of Great Western Engine Sheds 1947" by E T Lyons

Perhaps not everyones choice of holiday reading…….certainly Mrs D successfully concealed her enthusiasm for reading it. :roll:.

Which was actually quite convenient because I have been unable to put it down.

Its a stunning book for any GWR enthusiast and particularly for anyone interested in the immediate Post War years.  Every Shed built by the GWR is listed……..not just the fashionable ones on sleepy branch lines in Devon or the Cotswolds :lol:.  Each shed has its own page complete with track plan and photograph with all relevant details listed.

An absolute mine of information. I only wish I had it when I first started on Granby's shed. I had, for instance,no idea that quite a number of medium sized sheds had roundhouses……I thought they were generally restricted to very large sheds like Old Oak and Laira etc.

The actual loco allocation by shed at 31/12/47 is listed by wheel arrangement. This provided me with much food for thought. I have always suspected  that, perhaps like many other modelers, I buy too many 4-6-0 passenger and fitted freight expresses and not enough 0-6-0 work horses. Well the book certainly confirmed part of that suspicion.

Previousy I had always thought of Granby Shed as being similar in operation to Wrexham's shed at Croes Newyd.
Well in 1947 they had 39 locos….just like Granby……..but only one was a 4-6-0.

So I tried a comparison with  Chester (51 locos) and Granby: (38 GWR locos)

I am afraid I have probably bored most people to death by now….my apologies…….but I think this type of research is yet another aspect of the hobby and the constant search for realism…..I rather enjoy it

Now I am not for one moment suggesting these numbers should be set in stone but they do provide a useful guide…….probably wont buy any 4-6-0s for a while! I no longer need to justify having so many panniers

I am now not concerned that it is unlikely that there will be a new Manor in the next couple of years. But I am so pleased that Hornby and Dapol are producing, at long last, decent models of the Mogul and Large Prairie. I really hadnt appreciated how widespread their usage was in the area I model

Hope I havent bored you too much……though for the true GWR enthusiast….. if you need to know what was where in December 1947…..then I am your man!

I wonder if Mastermind is still running…..I may have found my specialist subject :roll:.
