End to End with Cassette Fiddleyard

Not a lot to show but here are some pictures of the start of my newish layout in my 16 x 8 foot shed.

L Girder baseboard construction.

Terminus on higher level with single line running down to a small harbour then down to a cassette fiddle yard under the upper terminus.

The back ramp down will be double track with one of the lines going into some form of industry in the centre of the loop.











There has been a bit more progress since I took these, I will take some up to date pictures in the next few days to show where I am at.

Progress has been slow due to other stuff getting in the way, but I can now actually run a train so the mojo is returning as I want to get on with the bit I really enjoy, the buildings and scenics…

You ate no stranger to woodwork then. neat.

I am no chippy, L girders, beams and risers are just very easy to get right, and leave lots of nice open space for scenics.

Also very easy to install the wiring as you can do most of it from the top, if you have to go at stuff from undeneath the access is still pretty good.

Out of interest anything happening with Deene sidings, is it to be incorporated in this new layout ?

Deene Sidings has been dismantled, I managed to salvage all the buildings, signals, telegraph poles, lampposts, trees and other bits and pieces.

The track and the landscaping had to be scrapped.

It was always meant to be the sacrificial test layout although it grew to two boards instead of the single inglenook board.

Anyway this is where I am upto as from today.

That's looking good so far. After reading this I found Deene Sidings. That was beautiful, I don't think I could have broken it up.

The L girder method seems to work well. What material have you used for the baseboard surface?

As I plan on using the buildings from Deene Sidings it will in a way live on.

The suface is a mixture of 6mm MDF and 6mm Ply, sealed with PVA then painted all round with some left over green cuprinol fence paint.

I have used up all my stock of code 100 track and modfiied peco and hornby turnouts, being on a budget I couldn't justify not using it, but the narrrow ramp up to the main terminus its going to be code 75 with handbuilt turnouts, just need to get some peco code 75 flexi ordered when funds allow.

So in the mean time I need to paint the track I have already laid and get the wiring bus in.

Very nice L-girder framing and the beginnings of a great layout… love the man-cave too. On my must watch list Andy. Keep it coming.

I built the viaduct but I dont think I will be using it.

Could possibly use part of it if I chop it up, or just make it into a diorama of some sorts.

Its a shame theres not some sort of model railway charity shop where you can give this sort of stuff away, would be a shame to bin it.

If you really want to pass it on this is the place to do it Andy, I'm sure someone will take it off your hands!

Hi Andy,

Nice open girder frame work. Just shows what you can do with butt-joints and screws. Not often you see a summerhouse being used instead of a shed, lots of light. Roller blinds as well.

The viaduct is a feat of engineering. do not bin it. It's too big for my use otherwise I'd have bought it from you never mind take it off your hands.
It will make someone an excellent focal point for their layout. I don't think you'll wait long before you are relieved of it. Shame to let it go though.

Why not use it as a photographic backdrop for your trains? full length trains would look great!!

Great way to use the space Andy.

Really like the idea of the fiddle yard under the terminus, must make operating that much easier.

Wasn't the viaduct originally intended to go across the door way?

Hi Andy   Very good work, even a gold star, or whatever award is handed out nowadays??. Can a Double Deck bus drive under the Viaduct? that is if you are planning a Roadway, passing through the arches. I was considering building some points myself and I saw some "Hand Built" points being made, on Youtube it looked straight forward?? but we all know that a camera can be made to lie (Just stop filming)But isn't cheaper to go out and buy Peco points, and not have extra fuss.     all the best  Kevin

my hand built turnouts cost me between 70-80% cheaper than commercial units from Peco though they did take some time - on average 1.5 hours to build a simple turnout.
