Yes I also remember the candle and wasn't it great when proper  toilet paper came along!

Oh yes Phil propper toilet paper was life tranforming….candles were everywhere in our house, we only had one gas mantle and that was in the kitchen, and the tin bath….thankfully those days are gone…

We had an outside toilet just like that with a 6" gap under the door and i can remember when i had to walk through the snow to get there. The cistern was high up on the wall and even now 50 years on people still say "pull the chain" even though we now have low level ones.We also had Izal?? toilet paper which should have been banned under the Geneva Convention.

Ps.  Great modelling.:thumbs

Here's the houses in place, I might put in some garages in pic 5 unless someone can come up with a better idea as there's a big space there.

Very good, I like the goal post on the end wall, I bet there will be complaints from inside when the ball start's bouncing off the wall…

Super modelling Phil

Tough call with that space…..is that a Chapel or school? Either would look good but so woul a few battered lock up garages on wasteland……the latter would give nice sight lines on to the railway.

As I said….tough call…….I am sure I will be admiring whatever you decide:lol:

John, you are probably right and easier to model than that chapel, yes it's a chapel :)  I like the idea of crappy run down buildings, corrogated rusty garages etc it just appeals to me.

A small enginners workshop might work, you could have rusty lean too add ons and a yard full of junk to go with your run down theme.

Or a corrugated chapel, one of those temporary jobs that last decades, with a small school hall on the side.
Or a Braggi (I think thats how its spelt) - coffee shop, bike racks and a bus stop, got to allow for the tourists

Paul…I don't think there were many tourists visiting in this era

Quite a lot now though that that the land has been landscaped and country parks built…looks like a totally different place!

Speaking of corrugated iron, why not a couple of nissen huts ?? They could have been ex military stores now used as providore stores, local mechanic or a junk/scrap yard…

Cheers, Gary.

There was an program recently on I think BBC, that covered the rise of the post war eating out for the masses rather than the chosen few. For Wales due to its strong Methodist stronghold and Chapels, covered the rise of Italian migrants to the valleys and Coffee shops, just wish I could remember the name of the program, as some of the photographs from the 20's and 30's were really useful.
