Trying to find/make/aquire some sort of rolling road type device
Ok I need some help, I know Hornby makes a rolling road for live steam (and it works on steam trains) thats great, I plan to aquire one of those soon if I can, however I kinda need some thing like that but that will work for both steam and diesel, as some of the diesels like my class 31 are long and have all wheel drive so it would try to push/pull its self off the rolling road, so does anyone have ANY type of idea or solution as to a way to more or less create a rolling road that will let me put an engine (steam or diesel) no matter if its short (0-4-0 or other small type like that) or a long one (think A4 and bigger as well as class 31 and larger) as at times space wise it is difficult to allow the trains to properly run in and I also some times prefer to not have the layout tied up to run in a loco (although I do enjoy watching them) in and would rather use a small space saving system to do the same thing and just have two items (excluding the engine in question) to set up and tear down…Im not sure if im asking the right question(s) but I really could use help with figureing out a way to pull this off…also if this is the wrong area to ask this forgive me as I figured the materials and tools would be fitting as Im looking for a tool to help run in trains and what not….thanks!!!
please note that it DOES NOT have to be just Hornby or one specific brand, just as long as it works for my needs…Thanks!!!

Bachrus and Bachmann make the best roller sets. I have them in OO/HO and G scales. The minimum you need is a set of four. That will do all four axle and six axle diesels and all steam locos, albeit leaving some wheels suspended.
Where you have a tender pick up, I have a short piece of track glued to a piece of ply. As the tender doesn't drive, it's ideal for feeding the power to the wheels. The front pony wheels can just hang, but I have made another short piece of track on a piece of ply where I wanted to make a video and have it all looking tickety boo.
Laka dis . . .

That way you don't have to mess about with bits of track glued to plywood offcuts.
