Pictures of your collection.

A short while ago I mentioned in a post that maybe we should have a " Pictures of my Loco Collection ".

Feeling somewhat responsible I will kick it off with the following :-

Wow, now that's just showing off, as none of my locos have even half those amount of wheels and that's just counting the ones on the tender!

 :notworthy:  :cheers2_2:

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

I think they built that one Friday night - had 2 completed 4-8-0 chassis but only one body so, to clear the workshop for the weekend, they used both chassis and added a spare bit of boiler to stretch the bodywork to fit………………..:mutley

Nice loco John - does it have a sound chip installed ?

Hi Bill, I can tell you don,t frequent train auctions.:mutley:mutley
Hi Peter, No decoder fitted,.
Hi Claus, Yes it is a good runner, especially at low speed, but currently I do not have a layout to run it on due to moving.
Most of my collection are still in their boxes, not all are new but most or in mint or near mint condition.
I do intend to start a new build in a few months but I have other things to do at the moment.
Hi Mat, Wheels  :mutley:mutley

Here is my latest - and I know this will raise a few eye-brows!!  Yes, it's LMS not BR(NE)R - there is a new layout in the pipeline that fits on the car and can get to exhibitions.  I used to model MR 1920's when I started "scale" modelling.  This new engine is joined by a 1P 0-4-4T and a pair of 1F 0-6-0T's.  One has an Open cab and the other full cab.

2 birds with 1 stone in this reply -

First bird -
John - interesting that you buy from Vectis auctions (in Middlesbrough/Stockton ?)   I susbscribe to their auction site but have never actually gone beyond "looking".  How have to found it as a buyer ?

2nd bird -
Barry - Nice, long lived design of loco - shame about the livery but it's a close miss.  The trackwork looks nice, particularly the ballasting.  Can you tell me more about it please ?

Barry, That,s a nice example and your scenic treatment shows it off really well.

Pete, I have found Vectis to be pretty good.

I usually go through the lots before the auction and put bids on what I consider to be " unusual " models.

They do appear to be " box shiftewrs " of Hornby and Bachmann so I stay away from them.

They are very proffesional in their accounts and dispatch departments and I have never had any locos arrive with transit damage.

The main killer is postage, which seems to be an issue worldwide so you just have to live with that if you really want an item.

The figures they realise on some lots can be a bit eye watering but the advantage of their live online auctions mean you can pick and choose, the main thing is to have a large amount of self control.

Thanks for the info John.  I have often wondered how good/bad they are.  Presumably selling bankrupt/deceased or otherwise ceased trading stock, maybe also over stocking surplusses plus of course, the "previously owned" stuff.

As you say, postage nowadays is a killer.  Although UK is just twenty odd miles away from France, I wouldn't mind betting our delivery costs are not far off yours at the other side of the globe !

HI all

Thank you for the kind comments about my scenery/ballast.

The rails/chairs are painted with Humbrol #70 to start with.

The ballast is Woodland Scenics "Fine".  It starts grey and is intended, I believe, for 2mm scale but is nice and small for 4mm.  I spoon it onto the track and level it with my finger.  Then its the usual method of spraying with water/washing up liquid from a shower cleaner spray which has a fine nozzle.  Then I use a pipette to drop a 50/50 PVA solution with another drop of washing up liquid, soaking the ballast.  Leave it 24 hours and, voila!!  I then spray using my cheapo air-brush with "Track grime" and a bit of "Frame Dirt".  "Oil" is sprayed lightly where locos/diesels stand.  A final fastidious clean of the track with the track rubber and you are good to go.

It should be noted that I have tried to replicate the 1960's feel for the track.  More modern ballasting is cleaner and deeper.

Hope that helps
Barry

Fortunately, I haven't done any ballasting for some time but last time I tried with Woodland Scenics ballast, which I believe is crushed shells, I had the devil's own job pre-wetting it before glueing with 50/50 PVA/water.

I used "wet water" sprayed though what I thought was a fine spray but the stuff just balled up into clumps.  How did you manage to avoid this problem or have they changed rthe raw material ?

Hi Peter
I confess that I thought it was granite chips - it certainly weighs a bit.  We have a number of cleaning products that are applied using a fine mist spray and I have used an empty one of those.  Plain water with a few drops of cheapo washing up liquid and the surface tension is broken enough to wet the ballast without clumps.  Before doing Yarslow (and previous layouts), I experimented with bits of track pinned to a board and various ballast products.  Woodland Scenics was the easiest to use.

Incidentally, on the Yarslow You Tube channel, I am building a little layout called "Maykin" to demonstrate my construction methods for Yarslow.  I am about to embark on a quickie about platforms and will then cover ballast.  Perhaps I can persuade you to "Like and Subscribe" (sorry) when my methods can be seen.

Kind regards

B

Barry please feel free to drop some links here in the forum for your Yarslow Youtube Videos if you havent already ?

Ballasting. . . . . yeah . .. . . did a bit, it looked sh!t£ !  AND I think the stuff I used looks just too chunky, even though it is meant for 4mm.
Think I may try your aproach and try 2mm. Thats IF I can persuade myself to have a go again !  think I'd rather run trains or poke at my eyes with a blunt finger :mutley

OOps!  I copied the page "Your Videos" thinking you guys could just view but apparently not.

The channel is not set up to earn me any money.  I don't agree with that as an idea.
