Plastic ducting cassettes

Here is my easy made short cassette.

Made from Manrose 110 x 54 plastic ducting and using joiners for location, end stops and current pick up.

Very neat idea Barry.

Given the material what do you think the greatest length might be which would retain sufficient stability?

Yes I realised that it was in wrong place after struggling a bit as photos when uploaded were turned upside down so I deleted and thinking I had a solution I turned through180 degrees in iPad photos and tried again expecting that when uploaded and turned again they would be right way up - wrong, still upside down🤯

I have made a longer cassette of around 43” by joining two lengths which were originally 1m long as supplied and it’s quite stable and handleable with two lifting points again made from a section of connecting piece.
Hope this helps, can you get same or similar in Australia?
I might add that when the section is split in half it has a tendency for the sides to spring inwards but can be made parallel again by heating radius on both sides a short length at a time with a wooden block placed between to force the sides out again to overbend.

Thx Barry,

It's a little too late for me now as I've built all my needs but it was a "just in case" question. A quick look on line here suggested that the typical profile supplied here is somewhat different, split along the middle so the sides are quite short. i.e. the conduit splits into two squat "U"s.

 In fact we probably have some outside our house for the aircon units so I'll have a closer look tomorrow.


BTW Petermac usually leaps to fix up mis-allocated topics so his absence has been noted! Probably too busy watching the TDF and soaking up that delightful French mid-summer sun while quaffing a Bergerac Blanc. (sorry Peter). In fact it's sometimes very quiet on here when the sun shines in Europe.

For N gauge cassettes, plastic trunking from DIY stores like Homebase works very well, 25mm wide 16mm high and 2M long; I have a plastic storage box just under 3' long, I've made wooden "trays" which take 5 or 6 pieces of trunking cut to length, each takes up to 6 coaches or 5 plus loco, I also have some shorter that can take a 2 coach push pull set plus loco or goods trains or vehicles.

On the layout I use 2 pieces of plastic angle to locate the cassette, and Kato track joiners on which the plastic surrounding the fishplate serves to align the cassette track with the layout track


An alternative is to use a rerailer hacked to fit in the end of the cassette but that can require pushing stock from cassette to layout unless you have a rerailer that can take current from the layout track (e.g. Proses)

Thanks for that much appreciated.Perhaps you can advise me on why when sometimes photos are uploaded to gallery from my iPad they are presented upside down.
I tried to correct by rotating in my album to be upside down thinking if the same happened they would upload correct, wrong thy still were upside down.
Tried again later with them correct way up in my iPad album and that time OK in gallery.
Two more recent photos are upside down and I can’t delete nor rotate, very frustrating and quite frankly losing patience as a newcomer to this, I’ll have to stick to modelling to save iPad being launched into garden😂

The simple answer is - old forum software - it was never originally designed with Tablets/Smart Phones in mind and so doesn't always handle them brilliantly. Some of the Mods have workarounds for it I believe so they may pop in and give some advice.

Unfortunately the opportunities to upgrade this software have passed - so niggly fixes like that aren't likely to happen (I didn't write this stuff, i just put some gaffa tape on the worst of the cracks) - so those kind of niggles will be in place unless at some point we wholesale move the forum onto new software, which you'll appreciate would be a big undertaking.

Phew, thanks for that explanation, I thought it was me bumbling through the learning curve.I worked on CAD for many years on mechanical design and like a car the inputs to operate become second nature.
That is until someone in their wisdom updates and moves things so that you have to find everything again whilst the boss is on your back!
Back to the manual drawing board using pencil and paper, yes I’m that old.🤣

My solution with iDevice photos is to transfer them to my PC, (via UBS link or emailed) and open in a graphics package.

Then follow these steps:
1) rotate to required orientation
2) select some / all the graphics area with your selection rectangular shape
3) paste as new image
4) save as a new file. (also allowing you to meet site size restrictions if original was too large)

This gets rid of all the nuisance embedded metadata or whatever hi-jinks the originator has hidden away.

It's often handy to crop out to a better format and you get the chance to tweak image properties however you wish.
