One of my 45 jobs on the D&S list of things to be done,  is conversion for the new D&S policy - knuckle couplings in lieu of anything else plus long vans, modified futher with bogies ( they do track better on long wheel based 4 wheelers)

So this Van will be converted with bogies & Kadee couplings ( it will slot in the time scale between Station Building construction, etc)




The bogies are Steam Era H0 units,similar to a couple of others I have done.

OK, removed  plug in wheels - the entire axle assembly pivots -( huge tension lock coupling that causes problems with small versions.) cleaned off brake levers & side frames, etc leaving some cylinders.
New bogie mounting bolsters & centre sills.




The piece of white styrene at the left will be the mounting base for Kadee couplers.

Couplings - because I body mount couplings, better for shunting bogie vehicles, when I first used a standard #5, it was too low. I didn't want to raise the height of the van - it would look stupid & not match 4 wheelers so I tried an Underset shank version #27 ( or #37 or 47)




This was still too low by about 1/16th of an inch.
Buffer beam as below



was milled out with a dremel to look like this






Now when the Kadee as above #27 is fitted, all perfect. If buffers  are  retained,  use a long shanked version like #21, etc .

Are the wheels smaller on the new bogies?

Yes Peter, they are smaller being 10.5mm making them 36" wheels in H0 but in 00, makes it 31.5". The main thing is that the side frames/buffer beams line up with normal 4 wheel stock.

Any idea what make the bogies are Sol ?  They look handy. :thumbs

Also, I presume all the white underfloor stuff is your own chassis addition to carry the bogies. :roll:

Now all finished , painted & matt varnished with new larger numbers to aid in operating.







Just putting the bogies on, makes it run better.

Ron, I agree entirely with you on body mounted Kaydee couplings for bogie vehicles. I'v altered all mine and use #156's. They have a nice long shank and work well-once you get the height right (and that sometimes is a pain.)

What make of wagon is it Ron?
