These brakevans used on ballast trains, had ploughs to help spread ballast - this shows mine with plough & Kadee on one end




The model is very heavy.

Part of the "privatisation" of the Devan and Summersett ( for new members - my layout), sees changes to rolling stock as knuckle couplings are being used to replace the old 3 link, etc. (irrespective of the fact that I have been using Kadees from day 1 on my UK outline stock, technically rolling stock is being updated when  purchased by the D&S  from GWR, BR, etc - that is my railway story)

So I had decided to update this brakevan




Buffers & all axle guards, etc under side frames removed

Bolster for bogies & centre sill installed = Kadees fitted



Bogies fitted & side frames & buffer beams painted  a very dark green - almost grey/black



The D&S Logo installed ( the bogies are Victorian Rail H0 units - wheels non-magnetic by Steam Era Models) - still slightly damp from a dull coat applied.

Shown coupled to a EWS hopper which in time will also get updated.



It tracks through all my home made 3 way  & commercial Peco code 75 points like a dream - far better than the 4 wheel version.

 

I can only blame Ian SA for this as I saw one such 4 wheel van he had put bogies on at the recent Exhibition I helped him with.

OK, now you have done it DD - I will need to look at it differently now.

Just take another photo and Photoshop it. 

Got out the calipers & both bogies are the same distance from each buffer beam end. Having a straight edge on the vertical handrails also bears it out. It must have been the slight angle - a new photo is better I think




I will have to re-coat with Dullcoat based on the photo, then start on the weathering. ( It will hide any mistakes)

 

Much better.  :thumbs  Do we know why they called them sharks?   I can see it on the side of the van.  Maybe the initials stand for something?

Even my mate Robbo thought it was OK, in his opinion, I only spoilt it with my Road Nme - it is small - I will try to make it larger.

Re-configured the logo - a bit bigger




Cameras are cruel but from the normal operating  position of around 2 feet away, looks OK to me & I am the only one to keep happy!

Did the prototype have solid wheels, Ron?
… or hand brakes?

Don't see many of those about in any form.

Just like a Victorian Railways brake van but shrunk - they had solid wheels - brakes are inside the bogie - I will have to ask my experts locally how they got applied manuually.
