Hornby Point Motor Extensions

Hi

Before I totally ruin a point motor, I changed my base board and now all my point motor extensions are too short.  So my options are to thin out the base board (since the original board was thinner) or replace the extension pin.

After using a router to thin out the base board, upside down, with saw dust everywhere, replacing the extension pin seemed a better option.  So after buying some 0.047 piano wire, grabbing some pliers I was sent to go.

Well no, the brass tube is holding the extension pin tight as and all I'm doing is bending the pin.  Is there are way of pulling them apart?  I thought maybe applying heat on the brass tube, but thought I'd ask first.

Cheers

Hi Regme

lay the tube on a flat hard surface , gently tap the

tube with a SMALL hammer , rotating the  tube with each tap ,

as far as is possible . This will expand the tube . Use Loctite or

 super glue on reassembly .

If you use heat , you risk damaging the motor .

Hi Reg Would this be of any use. Peco make a 30mm extention pin kit  Will fit onto your point motor pin taking its length to around 40 to 45mm. Accessories kit will fit Hornby R8014 plus Peco PL10 and Gaugemaster PM10  ?Seep
Kit was viewed on E.Bay.

Hi Reg,

There is an extension pin in a new pack, but Hornby do not have it as a spare. Go figure.

My approach (which I've used with Peco motors): Small metal sleeve (brass tube), tight fit over new pin, Loctite in place. Place other end on old pin, Loctite again. You can also solder the sleeve and extension and just have it as a tight fit, or drill and tap 2 small holes for a couple of grub screws.

All of this is more trouble than it's worth. New solenoids with extended pins are around £6.00 ($18 down you), less if you buy in bulk.
