Bought a Hornby blue S&D 0-6-0 Jinty

:hiAll, I have just bought a Hornby Jinty Blue S&D Railroad range, Okay its a low price model! I wanted an 0-6-0 working  chassis complete with wheels and motor for a conversion job.

To my surprise it has a throw away motor, after 100 hours use  bin the motor and replace with a new one.

Thats a new one on me!

Anyone come across this new maintainence method before?

regards.

They have been that way for a while now on some locos Derek, but it does not mean you count the hours and at the 100 mark, turf it - it could go for many more but they are just replaceable, not repairable.

I think the 100 hours is very conservative. You should be able to expect a lot more life than that, just that Hornby play "safe" with their claims.

So how cheap is the model in the first place and then how much is a replacement motor. Not sure I like the sound of a throw away system, unless the price makes it worthwhile.

And the Loco cost me £24 Robert which was okay,as I will scratchbuild a new body and maybe add a tender. Thinking of an 0-6-0 LNWR cauliflower? okay the wheelbase maybe a scale couple of inches out but with my eyesight it would have to be a yard out before I would notice.
Thanks for the link Ron and your post Jeff.
£5.70 is a bit dearer than a couple of brushes, still if its a good runner and reliable, okay I guess.

Have you looked at the price for brushes for the old X03/X04 motors lately? The cost of that replacement motor is only very slightly higher than the old brushes.

While the Jinty body is a bit past its use-by date now, the finish that Hornby have achieved on recent models is superb. It seems almost a shame to lose that lovely S & D Prussian blue scheme!

As for the wheelbase being out, who is really going to notice when the model is operational on your layout? I have a Southern Region Q class 0-6-0 which has the Wills/SE Finecast body and tender but a Bachmann J39 chassis shoehorned in. The rear wheelbase is too long so the rear axle doesn't line up with the rear splasher (which disappears into the cab front anyway) but when it is in use and running around, I don't notice this at all - a black loco with black running gear means that it all blends into the overall impression. I'd rather have the good running chassis with inaccuracies than build a chassis intended for the model that I have little hope of getting to run anywhere near as well as the RTR one.

:hmm

:thumbsThanks for the replies, John B, Ron and Jeff.

John, I shall post progress photo,s of the conversion as it moves along!

No problem Ron as long as the replacement motors stay available:thumbs

Good one Jeff, I have not counted the number of wheel spokes yet  but the wheels scale at 5'-2" which is just about right for the Cauliflower at least according to my old Mike Sharman  Wheel Specs book.

all the best,

Derek

PS: Gave the little loco a small test run on a couple of lengths of track, DC an old H&M 2000 controller, Its a sweet runner quiet and smooth in both directions.

Most modern Hornby locos now have throwaway motors, they are fine until the brushes wear out, then it's time to chuck the motor.  Had a Hornby B12, Super Detail M7, and J94/Austerity in the workshop this week, all non-runners all with the brushes worn out in the disposable motors, so all needing new motors.

My advice is to buy a spare new disposable motor for when your loco's disposable motor brushes give out.

I missed this thread first time around.

I assume these 'disposable' motors are standard across a range of models.
Therefore, would they be (subject to size) fairly easy to substitute for an original 'non-disposable' motor?
Like many of us, I have body shells tucked away in my spares box(es).

Thank you for your understanding of my ignorance.

I think 100 hours is quite a long time in model years.  Is this an X04 motor?  I think many of us spend far more time building and bodging than actually running.

Regarding the Cauliflower, I too am curious to see how this is done. What will you use for a body?
