The beauty of being a private forum again allows me to share this a couple of hours early.  I have just finished adding them all to our website ready to go live tomorrow (or tonight if I am still up at midnight).

Thanks Hornby again for making us all work right up to Christmas, especially after dumping thousands of pounds of stock on us with just one day before Christmas.  I have already ranted to Frank Martin about that but as this is not Room 101 I will remain calm.

Rail Express with a new editor has already released this info early and I believe that Hornby have finally had enough with them.  As they have also seriously peeved Dapol and Heljan they may only have Bachmann left willing to use their journal.

DO NOT POST ANY OF THIS INFORMATION ELSEWHERE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT

I have no more information until I visit Hornby on 5th January.  I am fairly sure that Bachmann will be peeved at them duplicating Tornado and I cannot see why they have bothered given that Bachmann have sold thousands already.

The Brighton Belle is an interesting choice!

Intercity coaches will be popular but can they really not be doing the FGW Sleeper?  Perhaps I might finally be able to persuade them to do a special commission for me this year…

Great to see all the LNER stuff.  Is that why the B1 Gazelle was reduced this week Chris?

Doesn't bother me that I ordered one from you though, as man can never have too many B1's…..

…..and Gresley Surburbans are a big plus.  :thumbs

The release of the Green Warship in the Railroad range is good news, as no doubt Hornby will make it DCC ready and add their new motor.

Gordon, the B1 was on my clearance list anyway as the cabinet that houses Bachmann steam locos was full!  Seeing that and the new Class 67 from Hornby gave me two more to get rid of pronto!

Correct Fidge, Hornby seem to be in "Get Bachmann" mode this year.  While they are busy squabbling I can get on with some of my projects (which may include some coaches to go with O2s…)

Novice, that Warship will be a waste of time.  No flush glazing, no working lights and an inaccurate body, all for just £10 less than the Bachmann version?

Thanks Chris for taking the time to post up all these details at a time of year when family traditionally comes first and the business after that and before niceties such as our little club.

I do appreciate the effort involved.  One of the disbenefits of living down under is the time difference; while the foaming hordes will have logged on to Hornby / RMweb and other such sites at precisely midnight it was 11am here when the information was released and some of use were already out and attending to other business of the day.

The choice of the "Lima" Warship is very curious given that - as Chris says - a far more accurate and no doubt better-running model can be had for little more in a blue box rather than a red one.  The choice of "Tornado" has elicited no small amount of comment over on RMweb, most of it wondering why they would bother but pointing out that the "Railroad" (i.e. kiddies train-set) version will be rather cheaper than the Bachmann one, albeit not as detailed either if most Railroad items are anything to go by.

The Brighton Belle seems to have been an open secret in certain circles; with a late 2011 release date it would be reasonable to assume that the cars were laser-scanned during the past 18 months or so and that a few people would have put 2 and 2 together but been sworn to secrecy.  Or at least sworn to not drop anything more than foam-drenched hints.

I suspect it will sell very well though it is very far from cheap.  The prices do not compare at all favourably with the 4-car Hornby Vep due now in April (a full 5-car Belle unit will be roughly double that price) and even the two-car power + dummy "motor coach" set is double the price of the 2-car Bachmann EPB and significantly more than Chris's own 2H "Thumper" commission which will have the R&D costs spread over a smaller number of pieces.  Hornby Pullmans contain exquisite detail but that has so far only put them at around a 33% premium over "normal" coaches, not nigh on 100%.

Costs and VAT have risen and I accept both must be factored in but at around £300 RRP (though listed at somewhat lower prices from your friendly local model shop) for the 5-car unit there will be more than a few interested modellers who might consider it a price hike too far.

For me the only item going straight on the shopping list is the blue/grey Gresley buffet and even then I'd want to see it first to make sure it won't look horribly inferior to the Bachmann Mk1's it would run with.  I am not a great lover of Hornby coaches when we can obtain much better for the same price elsewhere.

I want the diesel loco shed, a class 56 and a class 50 in BR blue. :thumbsWhat does "Laira blue" mean - is this BR blue - maybe someone could explain?

I am a bit disapointed that there is no class 08 in BR blue. I thougth this to be a popular and useful loco in this livery as it lasted very long on class 08 locos but maybe the market is saturated. Still hope for next year.

At last a class 31 in unweathered BR blue and then its he Railroad one:Red Card Why did they bring it always in weathered livery?

However a very diverse range should make lots of people very happy.

Now I better start saving for the Brighton Belle, both of them would be nice but at this price probably will buy the later version only.

'Laira blue' was not standard BR blue and was used on 50008 (and 50019 I think) at the end of their working lives.

The fotopic sites should give you an idea of the difference in colour between BR blue and 'Laira blue'.  It isn't that big a difference in my opinion.

Laira blue as per our website

One of the versions that we asked for as a limited edition to be told that they were not interested because they could sell thousands of them.  Eight years on and it is finally released!

Is Laira blue linked to Plymouth Laira or am i wrong there?

Brighton Belle models there was also a blue and white one in the Wrenn range the collection 100 yds from me has both the brown and cream and the blue and white versions.

Yes Brian - Plymouth (Laira) depot turned out a couple of 50's in non-standard blue and non-standard trimmings as well as per the Hornby illustration used by Chris.

The Brighton Belle units were repainted and had a bit of a refresh (not as much as a full facelift or refurbishment) in 1968-9 IIRC and emerged in near-standard blue/grey livery.  The car names and numbers on the side panels were replaced with "Brighton Belle" in white stick-on lettering which also lowered the tone of the thing though they were retained on the inlaid wood panels internally.

Hornby indicate their releases will be in "1934" and "1967" versions.  I am advised that the 1967 will be blue-grey but recall that they were still in Pullman livery at that time.  In 1934 they carried unit numbers 2051-3 having had the extra 1000 added sometime late that year to then carry the better-known 3051-3 set numbers which they retained until their April 1972 withdrawal.

Have I missed something Chris? Can you now get a green type 42 warship from Bachmann?:hmm

Bachmann have done an all green warship in the past.  I have 'Eclipse' in that livery.

You can only get it secondhand these days.

The point that Chris is making is that the Lima warship, now released by Hornby, was pretty basic.

Thanks Andrew. I guess that confirms that you cant get a new green Type 42 warship though, which in my view is a glaring hole in the market. Is this a marketing opportunity for someone?:hmm:roll::roll::roll::roll:

In terms of the all-new market (in order to compare apples with apples since there are plenty of oranges on the second-hand market) we have the choice of a superbly detailed model which runs extremely well across the range of speeds and hauls just about as much as you can hook up to it.

Available in maroon or blue but not yet in green though the Bachmann 2011 announcement is due in February and there might be something of interest in that.

And we have a basic, less accurate and potentially less capable locomotive retailing at almost the same price.  Without knowing which power unit Hornby intends to use in the former Lima product we cannot comment upon its performance.  Suffice to say the Lima ones relied on pancake motors, traction tyres and wouldn't pull skin off a custard most of the time.  They also had two speeds namely "Stall" and "Hare" with no finesse over the control.  We can only hope that Hornby will have somehow improved upon this though at the price tag offered when compared with their more competent diesel offerings I have my doubts.

And this will be available in green.

I guess you pays money and takes choice.  I would also be tempted to see if Bachmann offer a green one from their existing and excellent tooling before taking the plunge on the Hornby one.  If the good people of Barwell feel aggrieved that their A1 "Tornado" model has somehow been eclipsed by the announcement from Margate of the same item they might find a production slot for something to hit back with …..

It's a thought.

Les don't touch it!  The Bachmann one will be far better.  If Bachmann do not list a green one this year I will have one made, but I would be very surprised if they did not as it would be due this year, probably with another maroon one if I was to guess.

I would like a blue small yellow panel class 42. But could be persuaded to go for a red one, too.
