Reading Bob's post about Peter Denny & the Buckingham Branch, reminded me that I have 2 books by Edward Beal
1947 - New Developments in Railway Modelling
1951  West Midland - A Railway in Minuature.

Both books, while they are dated now- they still contain heaps of good info & quite often get them out to have a re-read of parts.
In fact , the West Midland one. I received that as a Christmas present in 1958.

Beal, Denny & to a certain extent, Awdry, while involved in the hobby, are all members of the cloth - does this mean that our  member in USA will be im-mortalised as well?

I recommend Edward Beale's 'Modelling the Old Time Railways', 1955, with items such as 'Forming a backsheet' [backscene], waterside features, and a host of trackside bits and bobs, his 'Railway Modelling in Miniature' 1950, literally hundreds of ideas to add to any steam era layout or one that features buildings left from the period, and, best of all, John A. Ahern's 'Miniature Building Construction' 1950 re-print, all contain scaled drawings to construct buildings, features etc from the pre-plastic days and are fascinating to read (IMHO) and all bought on-line from Amazon or their agents, 'Mindsight Books' [cgarman@blueyonder.co.uk] and all less than £10 inc. P&P.

Those books were my model railway bibles when I first started out all those years ago. Unfortunately they were all lost in the 'flood', along with the rest of my library.

My bibles too and long gone but I managed to get both John Aherne's books on buildings and landscaping via Amazon last year.   It's wonderful having them again and for me they are truly inspirational.

It's Sunday evening here, now and it's lashing down with rain, but I've taken that same stroll, Bob. Now I know what's kept me fascinated with model railways for so long :exclam:exclam

For me both Beal and Ahearn were in the "fairly recent past" when I started, but Freezer, Denny, Jenkinson and a little later Downes, provided ample inspiration.
