Request for material from Members

Hiya Gormo I'll add some photos from Scotland over the next week or so , just need to wrestle the decent camera back off the Ladd. Some nice old shop fronts and cottages etc around us I can snap. Also was thinking this would work well for industrial buildings and warehouses as mentioned, I'm thinking they could be mounted on card and used as a 'low relief' back scene behind an industrial area to give more depth ? Lots of possibilities as you said. I see a photo day coming on. On the storage front if space is going to be a problem then maybe members could post a group of thumbnail prints on a dedicated thread and anyone interested could p m that member with a request for a full size picture to be emailed. I know it would be better if the site could host the full images so even if a member isn't available we could still access the photos but understand this'd could take up a lot of space.

Hiya Toto, yes was thinking Linlithgow high street but there are also some shop fronts and some rows of cottages in bo'ness and then there is SSouth Queesferry as well , so plenty of potentially around

 Bittern….thanks…..that building you photographed for me would look good anywhere in my opinion. The resolution is brilliant and makes it quite easy to work with. Originally I mentioned Bicester in Oxford as my  basic idea for a town scene, because there is such a mixture of styles of buildings there. With your material input and material from others, Bicester will still look like Bicester only slightly different. I will have to send a background to the relatives there and ask them if they remember some of the buildings. Nah ….better not try and confuse them???

Matt….I look forward to any material you may have as well. You never know, we may be able to shift parts of Scotland to Oxfordshire???.

  I have been in contact with Alan re a dedicated area on the forum for this material. Alan in turn has done some research re the forums capacity / allowance. It seems that pictures of high resolution / quality would quickly put quite a strain on the system. The solution would be, as you say, thumbnails to show what is available, and then members would have to transfer files between each other via email.

  I suggested to Alan that we should wait and see if this subject develops into something worth dealing with in some way. At the moment interest is starting to build, but I think we should be patient for a short while before jumping into dedicated areas.

  In the meantime, it`s quite a pleasant experience with people pitching in and offering to help.

  Railway modellers are a nice bunch of people!!!

Where images are already available to download on line (with no copyright problems?) maybe a list of links would save forum space. A number of us probably have images on sites such as Flickr, Picasaweb, Photobucket, etc so there should be no need to duplicate on the Forum gallery. They could also easily be displayed as an attachment to a post.

            That`s a good suggestion re downloading from members sites. It would preserve the forum resources and be fairly easy to work with by simply adding a link to the relevant site.

            The attachment to a post idea could be a bit awkward as it would require those posting to monitor file size and keep it under 5mb, as I understand it. The other thing is that, files that should actually be posted ( because of their small file size ) in the gallery, could end up as attachments and thereby throw out the balance of things. In effect, this method would require monitoring by the moderators to the point where it becomes an annoyance. Personally, I would steer clear of that one.

A couple of ways it could be organized Gormo,  I've just done a quick browse in the prototype photos section and although there are some great pictures in there I didn't see too many that would be usable straight off. Maybe if as header was added there say ' usable photos for street scenes' or something like that ? With the first post from yourself explaining the idea ( as you have done here) with a couple of examples , A post from ' DA management ' explaining how it will work , maximum image size or thumbnails etc whatever is decided and type of posting and also thecaviat that all images are by the poster and were free from copyright and for the free use of members. Posters can then put up a post with the thumbnails or low rez images etc and where they can be accessed , members site, web page , direct by email etc . I would also suggest that posters think about sending a copy of the high rez pictures donated, stating they are copyright free, to a couple of senior members so that a hard copy of the library can be maintained in case of accidental wiping or a member not being around for any length of time

  Don`t worry about the wall of text because you`ve explained your ideas very well. I think if this thing get`s off the ground, it should follow exactly the format that you have suggested.

  I`ve been looking at ways of making my own material available offsite and as yet have not settled on one particular method. It will fall into place eventually, like most things do.

 The other thing that comes to mind ( while I think of it???) is that I thought I would make my finished backgrounds available as well for anyone who wants them. Obviously they may not be to everyone`s taste, but they could be used as templates and overlayed with other material to individualize them.

 Just a thought?

Your background is good and I'm sure there would be loads of people only to happy to have them grace their layout.

  No I don`t happen to have any spare turntables lying about……I feel I should have though, just in case somebody wants one…….now that you mention it.:hmm

  You see, once this 3D printing technology gets sorted out properly, you would think that my 3D printer could send your 3D printer the relevant info and yours could print one out !!!!!….simple really??? I could just scan it and send it.

 One could take in one step further in the future and we could start emailing ourselves across the world via molecular transfer. I could email myself to your shed and be there in 2 minutes???

A free Dropbox account will give you a couple of gigabytes of storage that you can share files from and then if you then recommend others you receive extra free space.

OK Folks,

  After a shaky start I think it is going to work out well. Andy made a suggestion about a drop box which will allow members to access material / photographs via a link posted on the forum.

  I signed up for a free account with Dropbox. com which gives me 2GB of storage. That should be plenty to cover what I`m doing.

 You transfer files on your computer to the dropbox folder which is installed onto your system. Once you transfer the files on your computer they automatically upload to your online Dropbox site.

 When you sign in to your Dropbox online site, you can create a link to any photograph there, which you can copy and paste onto this forum. The link will allow access to that photograph.

 The thumbnail posted above was 200 x 118 @ 69.14kb.
