Painting a backscene/ skyscape

Hi All. Having been faffing around for so long without getting anywhere , and now I have got the track and Uncoupling magnets ,even some ballast , I have built a new lid/ backboard for one of my Shunting Puzzle Planks. This will keep it secure when stowed away. But I would like to paint a skyscape inside the lid , the plywood is new, and I  need some advice, do I use primer or gesso?? And what type of paint do I use? of course I intend having low profile buildings, but, I don’t want bare wood covered in fingerprints as a backdrop . Best wishes. Kevin

The very easiest way is to use matt light blue emulsion paint and add a few clouds if you like, using white. You can experiment by mixing some blue and white together to vary the view.

Remember to sand down any rough bits first and cover the baseboard with two layers of newspaper.

 If you dont have any suitable colour remember that tester pots from B&Q or other stores are a good source, not the cheapest by volume but as you will only need a small amount, better than buying tins or expensive artists paints, you can buy two or three different blues or whites to mix

Hi Matt I have been researching back scenes , and in OO Gauge I have found that I can purchase them either in Standard printed on heavyweight 180 gsm high quality paper, or the premium version on Polypropylene , which is self adhesive. But both are 9 inches high. The trouble being that the height at nine inches is a bit lower than I would prefer, and would require some infil? With either paint at the top or buildings at ground level. And I am certain that there will be other issues with glossy self adhesive or high quality paper.  Best wishes Kevin 

Never bought one Kevin so no idea if they are available in larger sizes, but nothing to stop you going to your local friendly printers and have them run you off one at the size you want ?  I'm sure some other membrs who HAVE used them will be along with suggestions soon  :thumbs

The standard gaugemaster ones are 12 inches high Kevin they do quite a range if you look they are 9ft long in total split into 3 sections they are printed on paper and you have to affix them yourself and are easily available at many model shops.
