One all steel open, one ex GWR open 5 plank.
I have had an all steel BR iron ore tippler wagon for many years, in fact it is my very first O gauge anything, but I have never felt happy with the finish on it so I decided to bite the bullet and do some thing about it, this is how it looked before attacking it.![](https://yourmodelrailway.net/gallery/1766/1766_281730_270000000.jpg)
First job, distressing the surface and decals.

Next I dappled it with rust paint patches.

I painted the wheels and axles at the same time.
I used Humbrol Maskol on top of the rust patches, it dries very quickly and becomes rubbery.

![](https://yourmodelrailway.net/gallery/1766/1766_281735_250000000.jpg)
Next up I painted the body with pale grey, leaving the decals un painted.

After the paint had dried I peeled of the maskol which removed the paint leaving the edges crumbly.

Next I gave it an all over wash with modelmates weathering inks, then while it was still damp, I used some weathering powders for texture.

Next up I started on the ex GWR 5 plank.

Although a really nice wagon, it wasn,t suitable for my needs, so out with the fibreglass pen and off with the decals and paint.

![](https://yourmodelrailway.net/gallery/1766/1766_281719_400000001.jpg)
I masked of the body and sprayed the chassis matt black.

![](https://yourmodelrailway.net/gallery/1766/1766_281719_400000003.jpg)
I painted the body bauxite and picked out the iron work a mucky grey, I left some of the planks unpainted to be painted as new wood.

I like the idea of the rust on the ore wagon - that peeled paint is exactly what happens in real life. What colour did you use for the new planks on the 5 plank wagon ? It looks great.

They look really great very well done indeed. I had someone come up to my layout at a Mansfield show and said these 7mm wagons are models in their own right. Yours amplify that remark perfectly.
Cheers - Jim
