I am looking for a 00 gauge tree grate
Hi All,on kingsmead I am adding a few trees to the street scene and I have been on the look out for some brass tree grates to go around the base of trees, a picture of an example at the below link, It dose not have to be as fancy as this though;
I have looked through a number of sites and search the internet to no avail, and I was wondering if anyone else has done this previously and if they could point me towards a suitable retailer.
Seasonal Regards to all

They do other scales as well so may be worth checking those as well

Could you photograph one or something similar and print it out to scale and cut it out……or would that look a bit ordinary???
Or????…….photograph a doiley, as in Ed`s suggestion, and do a reduction print to scale and cut it out and colour it to suit.???
:cheers Gormo

You could do the same but use bronze paper, punch out the pattern and then mount on black card to emphasis depth.

That is an iron casting about 1"/2.5cm thick. You can find find similar patterns in churches that function as hot air outlets.
In OO that's 0.0132"/0.03cm. I suspect that if you print it out on thick stock paper in rusty brown and black/grey underneath it would not be worth trying to cut out that intricate pattern. Or as said, take a photo of one from above (one piece) and do a bit of editing.
The pattern is not that complex to draw, getting it etched will be expensive for just a few trees. You could try the people in York who also do 3D cutting, or get it 3D printed. Expensive if you do not send the right file format. Have you tried the Shapeways site to see if it has already been done? Amazing what's available. Try the various window frames or church Windows. Or even tree grate.

Back on the laptop. I just searched tree grate , there lots of images and plans online. About 1.5" thick (not 1") seems standard, about 0.02" in 1:76 (0.51mm, not sure how I got 0.03 on the previous post:oops:). Square, oblong, circular diamond, plenty of design choices.
I would contact one of the manufacturers and see whether they would allow you to use their design in OO on a personal basis (Copyright!), and reduce it to fit.
York Modelling (http://www.yorkmodelmaking.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home) have some circular windows, or you could ask them how much for a tree grate to you design.
If you search under "Drain Cover" there is quite a choice. Drill a hole in one of the circular ones. Noch do a set of 25 (various including circular ones). Have a look at some of the brass etches that Scalelink carry (http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/General___Scale_1_76__OO__Varieuse.html). Manhole, Clock faces or corner brackets (4) might do the job.
I'd go cheap and print on thick stock and not worry about the 3D aspect. Or get some etched if I was doing a long street.

I like the idea of using a round window, No luck in hobby craft over the weekend so I am hoping on doing a few print outs today and trying them this evening (if I have time) to see how they look, I will try and post the results if i can.

Don't know if these windows are any good to you, perhaps a little too large. They are yours if you wish me to send them to you. PM me with your details if you are interested. As you can see, they are 20mm (5 scale feet) in diameter.
Cheers, Gary.

Some more thoughts. If you have a Spirograph set around that would give you a nice intricate pattern. Scan and reduce to the size you want. £3-£5 on eebygum for a used set. You could also try Grandt #5262, 2 of, rather than Grandt Line #5240 as it's a bit smaller (56" diameter in HO), or for something really intricate a photo of a "Rose" or "Wheel" church window printed in B/W.

your offer is much appreciated, many thanks,
I have already tried out a printed version, and will see how it looks over the next few days.

As promised I managed to make an hour or two this evening to try out a print out of a tree grate, photos of result below, Feedback much appreciated.
Just printed, cut out and plonked in place,
Paving for this section added and the grill glued on top, the tree is not fixed down yet, but the plan is.., after I have done road markings and all the other things that the tree will get in the way of, to have it set in with something around the base.

The others will be plain sailing now,
Bill :)
At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

That looks the part. Looks 3D as well. Minimal cost, golden!
