Brick Built 8 Arch Viaduct

The start of my Brick built 8 arch viaduct, I have cheated a bit as I have used the Scalescenes low relief arches as a starting point.

First we have the arch sides cut out and made up

Need 4 of them for my 8 arch version

Then joined them together into two sections for ease of handling.

Trial fit to see what the length looks like

Then started filling in the arches

With a bit of luck I should get the arches all filled in by the weekend, then I need to add a small ledge to hide the join between the arch and arch sides, then its onto the piers.

Should get some better pictures at the weekend in daylight.

Comments welcome….

That's looking great Andy.  I think that getting the arches right is probably a tricky bit.

Yeah the arches are a pain, two sets of two have already gone into the recycle bin.

Once I have all the arches infilled and reinforced from behind with thin card, I think I will have to cut some soldier course overlays for the inside lip and some front overlays to tidy the arch courses.

Once the whole thing is finished I will get rid of any white edges using watercolours and artists pastels.

Very nice, Campaman.

I downloaded the Scalescenes viaducts and extension support piers some months ago with a view to using them on Newton Broadway. However, I decided to use some plastic Vollmer kits instead, but I may still use some of the Scalescenes product elsewhere, as I have already printed out several arches.

Your viaduct may have just tipped me over the edge … thanks for the inspiration.

Originally I thought about using the scalescenes one but I needed the track bed to be wider than the kit, so thought I may as well just scratchbuild it, I am using Scalescenes TX01 Red Brick paper though for the brick.
First lot of arches done, second lot have the first flap stuck on and left to dry then I can finish those off this evening.

Just printed off 20 more sheets of TX01 Red Brick and a few of my own made Concrete texture so I can start on the piers later.

Great looking viaduct Andy, and, by all acounts, a tricky build.  :thumbs

I had thought of modifying the kit to build a curved viaduct but when I looked at the prototypes, decided the geometry was far too difficult from a kit …………..:hmm  One day, I may, only "may", have a go at scratchbuilding using John Wiffen's excellent components. ;-)

No too much progress this weekend as we went out to visit friends.

And Doug I think the Cider may have caused a bit of a c**k up, will have to do some checking of local arches before I am sure, but luckily it should be easy to fix.

Will take a few pics to see if anyone can notice the error.

Right, mistake confirmed, you can just make out from the zoomed image below that I have the brick courses running the wrong way on the underside or the arches.

Will have to cut 8 new pieces and apply them to the arch undersides.

I really dont want to start again from scratch, will see how it turns out.

Doh!

I think I would be inclined to leave it as it is, after all, who's going to see it and think about it from normal viewing distance. Saves a lot of work and printer ink.

Mmmm, maybe, I see where you are coming from, the thing is the ink and paper doesn't cost me anything really, I print it at work as I am one of the owners so the cost is absorbed by the business.

The other thing is I will know its not correct.

Will carry on with the piers and see how I feel once they are constructed.

As Mick said Andy, only you will see it so, unless it bothers you, I'd be tempted to leave it as it is.

On the other hand, if you are going to re-print, many brick arches had diagonal courses ……………:roll:

Trouble maker Peter, too late new arch underside brickwork is now in place, proved to be very easy to do and just adds extra strength to the arches.

I will do a skew arch on a bridge at some point as it looks so good.

Mind you if I don't need the viaduct once finished I could donate it to maxmill…….
