Good evening all,

I'm a 20-year-old university student from Dartford, Kent, slowly getting steadily into the hobby since dipping my toe in the water around September 2010, when I took a year out of education after finishing sixth form. Despite my age, modern image stuff doesn't interest me too much - in fact, I seem to have caught the bug from my father, and his love of all things 1970s/80s and Western Region has transferred to me! Diesel hydraulics, Class 50s (I'm guessing my username/avatar is a slight giveaway on that? ;-)), everything like that, as well as some of the steam that proceeded it, Kings, Castles, Praries, Panniers, the lot. I say I get the bug and that's all I like, but to be honest most mainline railway operation before 1990 or so interests me to some extent, just the Western Region most of all, followed closely by my native Southern :)

I'll go into detail about my layout when I start a topic in the layouts section, for now, good evening folks, and I look forward to chatting to y'all and tapping into your extensive knowledge - I'm learning all the time, and stuff that must seem like old hat to you is new and bewildering to me, so prepare yourself for me tapping you on the shoulder and saying 'is this right? what does this mean?' etc, haha!

Hi there Adam. Ask as many questions as you like on here, someone will know the answer or they will know a man who does. Looking forward to seeing what you are doing and a warm welcome to you.

Welcome to the "club" Adam.

As you say, there are things that, to beginners, seem like old hat to those with experience but remember, they also were beginners at one time.  It's for the benefit of beginners that this forum was originally started.

Don't ever think it's "to simple a question to ask" - if you don't know the answer, it's not simple to you so ask away !!!

A pity about your chosen era/region but we can't have everything I suppose !!!  From the replies in this thread, you'll have seen there are other members suffering from the same illness ...........:roll::roll::mutley:mutley:mutley:mutley

Looking forward to seeing how your layout progresses. :cheers

Thanks for all the pleasant greetings :) I'll get round to posting up my layout topic ASAP.

Thanks Robert, it does strike me that this place is a fountain of knowledge, and I've already been nagging my father on various aspects of the railway...basically along the lines of 'did that happen? Can I get away with doing that?'

Ken, looks like we'll get on just fine! ;-)

Peter, very true, and that's the attitude I take! I'm glad you guys take that frame of mind :) Hah! Calling it an illness would insinuate that it's something negative that I can cure, in fact it's neither of those things! ;-) One of the other forums I'm on is heavily modern image, and doesn't have much time for 'kettles' in general, so I'm one of the few steam/BR diesel defenders on there :)

Welcome Adam.  Like you, I'm waking up in Kent this morning, watching the promised 'sunny periods' splashing all over the patio!

Terry
