Here are a selection of photos of the coaling stage at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I liked it very much and may consider building a model of it at some stage, hence the number of photos:

It certainly looks complicated, but how difficult could it really be? :?

A few sketches to work out the geometry. A few plastic or brass 'I'-beams of various sizes, a bit of platework here and there, add a few struts, and Bob's your Fat Controller!

I've got a horrible feeling I'm going to talk myself into building one of these if I'm not careful.   I must admit the geometry fascinates me.........

..........and this is just a selection, Tim. I've got some more! :D I may contact the NYMR to see if they can tell me anything about the structure; where it came from, how old it is, etc. Now what would be REALLY good would be to get permission to photograph it properly - from all sides. A quick measure up wouldn't go amiss either. I must admit I found it possibly the most fascinating structure on the whole line. Sad bunny, ain't I? :?

Don't tempt me, Phill.

I really MUST get on with the layout. The goods shed project has swallowed up three months of my time.

That would also make a fairly easy card project as well Perry. As you say it's mainly different sections of girder work, plate box structure and rodding of varying thicknesses. There would still be quite a bit of guesswork though without more information.

Very true, Bob. I thought about asking if there were any drawings for it but I rather think something like this ends up with bits welded on or cut off as the need arises. I think another trip to the NYMR is called for at some stage with camera, sketch pad, pencil and tape measure at the ready. :D

Perry,
How about a thread on how to prepare to build the coaling stage at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway?

How about I get some time to work on my layout and do a bit of 'testing'? A wheel hasn't turned on it for 3 months! What do you want - blood?

Sorry Perry, didn't mean to get you upset.

You just sit down and do all the testing you want to. You certainly deserve it.
