I've tried to find details of the annual March/April West of England Show at Carn Brea, Redruth for 2011 for some people in our village, but I don't seem to be able to find anything.

As a lot of the Redruth Club members seem to be on this Forum, perhaps they could give us a clue as to what's happening, please.

Many thanks Piran, however the Hayle Club's shows do not have the wide range of traders etc., that Carn Brea had.

As stated in the OP, the info is for others in the village, I get to 'big' shows all over the country with my layout etc., it's the locals who are looking for a 'big' show.

Sorry to hear Carn Brea isn't going ahead.

I also note a profound silence from several of our usually talkative Cornish members and wonder if there is any connection?

That's a shame, it was a good show.  I'd heard a rumour that Carne Brae was not going to happen this year and there certainly had been no publicity for it.

IT is correct there is no annual West of England show in the middle of March this year.

Last March Redruth club made a significant loss near to £1000 they obviously swaloowed it but any model rail club has to question if to risk it again.

Our show in September which they assisted with for them was a gauge if to try and hold their show this March.

We as you all know made a profit but you have to bear in mind a lot of that profit was generated due to the generosity of many in donating things.

If you look at the figures if you take the donations away what they generated money wise and look at it from a purely commercial point of view we actually made a trading loss although not much .

So with that information they made the decision not to go ahead with another March show.

I know they are considering something else but im sure they will announce that if they decide to  go ahead

Many thanks HenryParrot,

As I'm not a member of any of the local clubs, their finances are not my concern, but I agree the Redruth Club have to look after the Club's finances carefully and if there's a loss with further potential for losses, then they have to make the decision to limit their liabilities.

The Kernow/YMR show last year, as far as I was concerned as a punter,  it was a seperate venture supported by local knowledge from the Redruth Club, and very successfully too.   Whether all that trade support would be available at any future Kernow/YMR event I don't know, and indeed it's not for me to know either, that's a private matter between all the parties that may host any future event.

A sad loss though the March show from our west country calender.

Yes all clubs have to be realistic with the potential of a possible loss like last year im sure all the club members there were concerned as any club members would be as im sure the last thing they would want is to have to say to the club members sorry guys all the hard work you have done is for nothing and we need £100 off each of you to cover our losses.

Kernow show next in September2012 is something that yet has not been fully decided on yet.

As a member quite recently of Redruth club which i have now left yes we made big loss in the last show which it was decdiedthat they could not sustain. But another point worth making the club lost over the last couple of years a lot of members. although i understand its slowly picking up in reply to Penlan regarding the Hayle clubs show which i am now a member of it might be a smaller show but we always make a small profit and is always well attended.Piran

There are more than enough members of the other Cornish clubs who would be willing to help out the Redruth Club should they ever decide to resurrect the West of England Show. I know that the Carn Brea Leisure Centre now wish to charge an arm and a leg for the use of their premises making the likelyhood of that event even more remote.

It's a sad fact of modern life that venue owners / operators now charge so much for the venue hire that it's impossible for small operations to even think of hiring them.  The result is there's no show and the venue stands idle.

It's the same for retail premises.  Very few small shopkeepers can afford the high street overheads, councils won't reduce them so they end up with nothing - just a scruffy empty shop which makes the town look like a derelict site.

I'll stop now before I really get on my high horse .................:It's a no no

Just to get things in perspective the show we put on last september the expenditure to put on that show totalled nearly £10,000 if not just over we were lucky because we made profit on top of that of £2000 to give to charity but that was due to the charitable donations and the sterling work done by the people  on the YMR stand .

So as you can see by the amounts involved you dont have to have to many things go wrong to be in serious financial crap

Hi guys, I've been busy sorting out our May show at Hayle personally, but people would be surprised the cost of putting on an event like that ie: hall hire, insurance, accomodation, travelling expences, van hire, food and thats before you've done advertising or brochures. So you need a high number through the door to cover this but this has been dropping due to the recession.
Also with the cost of fuel rising traders aren't so keen to come so far down.
