Just had a browse at the website for the 2009 Gauteng Convention in South Africa.  Here are some photos of the layouts open on the various tours:

Formal Day tour 1     http://www.2009gauteng.hot.co.za/day_tour1.html

Formal Day tour 2     http://www.2009gauteng.hot.co.za/day_tour2.html

Informal evening tours     http://www.2009gauteng.hot.co.za/evening_tour.html

Pretoria day tours     http://www.2009gauteng.hot.co.za/pta_tour.html

It's interesting to see modellers' (they call 'em "railers") styles from another continent - particularly how they see the South African landscape.

Peet Jansen must have done something wrong for everyone to turn their backs like that.  :mutley

Some great looking layouts there Max - what a pity there doesn't seem to be a facility to zoom in or even to enlarge.

I might do some Googling to see if I can find out more ........

I see what you mean about Peet Jansen - I wonder what's going on :hmm

What's interesting also Peter, is that model rail seems to be very small as a hobby by comparison to other continents.  From what I've seen they do pretty good work.  I must check the population numbers, maybe that's the key.

The population of South Africa is a moving feast.  World Factbook has it listed at 43,997,828 (although that may have changed as I'm typing ).  The Government site, southafricainfo has it listed as "over 49 million" on one page of their site and "over 47 million" on another page.

Averaging out all references, it's probably more than twice Australia's population, so there should be lots of modellers there.  Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

Mal Kent/ Kaiser who lives in Jo'burg responded to my query for a mate who is going to South Africa in Feb about hobby shops in Cape Town,

Last time I was in Cape Town was 2002!  I can only find one model shop listed :
Model Rail Specialists
114 Main Road
Plumstead
Cape Town 7800
021 761 3070.

There are only 2 shops that I know of in Joburg & only one of those stocks any British outline stock in quantity.  I get most of my stuff mail order from UK.  American & Continental HO seems most popular here.

I have also PMd Don Bradley who lives in the Cape.

Perhaps 2 million people were born whilst the Government was typing those 2 pages Max :roll::roll:  Governments the world over move pretty slowly when it doesn't involve increasing taxes.

We have South African friends and he recently suggested S.A. was a third world country.  He curently lives and works in Singapore but when he's back in Cape Town, he doesn't travel much.  The rather violent and slightly unstable reputation South Africa has gained over the last 20 years or so may have some bearing on it.

It is interesting looking at the type of modelling done in the various countries and wondering why they model what they do.  Here where I live, it's almost entirely RC model aircraft :hmm
