As my TPO is still held up awaiting tools (thanks to somebody who keeps selling what I need before I get chance to take it home!) I thought I would have a go at changing the livery on a Class 158.

You may or may not know that some of the more recent liveries on the real thing are not painted but applied by vinyls.  This is quicker and more durable for the real thing and also allows more complex liveries to be applied.  The only problem with this is that manufacturers are not able to recreate them as you obviously cannot paint a body shell with the equivalent of tartan paint for example!

The only way around this is to apply vinyls of your own.  This is way too time consuming for manufacturers and would make the models too expensive so for now the only way to do this is to get the transfers yourself.

As they need to totally hide the livery below they need to be quite thick which is a downside.

First, the parts needed.

These are self adhesive and unlike the Amsies versions you do not need to file the body smooth as the detail is all left in place.

Unfortunately they do not quite fit and no amount of stretching and moving about allowed the side vinyl to be in the correct place at both ends.  As a result I had to trim it slightly.



There are a couple of areas that still need trimming around the suspension and my choice of donor vehicle has also left a bit of the old livery showing on one window frame.  The hazard light does not quite line up either.  I may be able to get around this by painting the gap orange which will mean it will be bigger than the real thing but should look better than the gap that is left.

I have three more sides to do yet and hopefully my technique will improve.  From a distance in low light it looks quite good but close up it is nowhere near as good as a proper manufacturer model would be, but I suppose if I want this livery this is the only option at present.

As you say Chris, as there is nothing else, what options do you have? None!
So it will be slightly out - well - I would prefer something slightly out than have nothing.

When I had one of my vans done recently, the signwriter used vinyl decals and stretched them with the hot air from a hair dryer.  Would that work with these?

From the photo of the completed side it look fine, and I am sure that after you have painted the orange light it will look even better, have you managed to lay the vinyls onto the body without any air bubbles, as that can not have been easy, just a little weathering and it will be fine. :thumbs, and it didn't take many tools :roll:

That looks really good Chris i have seen the vinyl overlays advertised before but never seen one done there is a chap on Rm Web who advertises doing them i think he will do custom ones aswell but i have no idea of the cost.

It looks quite good to me, Chris, certaily better than not having anything in that livery. I think the point made about weathering is a good one. Applied selectively, I'm sure weathering will make the end result quite convincing.

I take the point about weathering but the fact it is a complete vinyl overly could be a problem applying anything to weather it vinll has not got good keying properties

Sounds to me like a bit of testing is needed to see, if the vinyls can take either airbrushing or pastels....................Over to you Chris !

It works for me Chris and looks good.

I have seen Amsies advertised but no others. I sort of dismissed them only because they concentrated on modern stock. Do you know if there are vinyls to change say blood and custard coaches to maroon or choc and cream?

:hmm Chris, that's brill. To be able to apply something like that needs a steady hand and a really good eye. I remember some of the applications of transfers on kits when I was a lad and I never could get them straight. That looks really good. :doublethumb

Thanks guys, I had to use a hair dryer Max to get it to stretch enough to clear the windows at one end.  Maybe I should have heated and stretched it a bit more.  I'll see how the other side works out.

I am not sure what weathering will do to it, although they do say that you can seal it with varnish, so presumably if I am careful that may work. 

These vinyls are from Electra and were £15.  The Amsies ones are cheaper but I did see a whole load of vehicles done with these at the Eastleigh show and to be honest I thought they did not look very good.  With Amsies you have to file all the details off the bodyside and it just makes the coach look very weird.

I have not seen any to change coach liveries like that Les, but they would probably be easier to repaint anyway.

I was surprised at how easily the vinyls applied, ignoring the fact they did not fit very well, and I had no trouble with air bubbles.  You can work on them for quite a long time before they set.

Chris as you have no time to do these etc, what with all those nice pics you take for us on your walks and looking after your shop, the list go's on, i reckon Alan should have ago, i mean that wagon build he has done will be done in a couple of days so he be free, :thumbs:mutley
