At the west of england show today i asked one of the exhibitors what he had used for his long grass on the layout . What he had used was Plumbers hemp bleached then stained or painted to colour of choice it gave a very good effect i will edit this and upload a piccy once i have sorted them out. cheers Brian.W |

I use it quite a lot Brian. Here it's chopped up as straw for the horses.

I haven't used plumbers hemp, is it still available? However I have used ordinary sisal string cut and glued down and then painted, or in fact left natural for a dry end of summer grass effect. Like Robert I have found yet another use.  This time as straw packing around glazed ceramic pipes in a BR shock waggon. |

That's a good 'un Frank, packing straw. I hadn't thought of using it for that. Great idea.

Hobbycraft in the UK stock some useful fibrous material that can be dyed etc. Plumber's hemp is great! Packing straw, there's a great idea, half the joy is using materials that were nver designed for model railways and adapting them 8). Where would you get packing straw from? I imagine it would be ideal for barley and wheat crops? |

I would have thought that Frank's sisal string (available in balls from cheap shops) is about as close to scale packing straw as we are going to get :!: | |||||||||
