Stage one of Wombat Creek Tramways is getting into the finer details. Of course the streets in Wombat Creek need a few traffic signs, but I find it very hard to find the right ones considering the year of the lay-out is 1963. I have searhed the net but withour great results. I went into the local secondhand bookshop and asked for old traffic books. Ended up with a 700 page book about Australian birds! Claus, I found the following in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_Australia and typing (into the Control+F find function) 196 (for the 1960's) and found some signs that were in from 1964. I will see if I can find some others. On the subject of roadsigns, one of the best protest signs I have ever seen anywhere/ anytime was about the jails on the Geelong Bacchus Marsh road when the first was being built. There were the usual "No Prisons for Barwon" type signs but the best one ( and I wish I had taken a pic of it) was a yellow road sign with a silhouette of a guy running attached to a ball and chain with the caption "Next 10kms" under it. Just remember we were an imperial country prior to 1973 and your speed limits should be in Miles per Hour. 35 was standard in virtually all suburban streets right around Australia but you would need a 5 or 10 mph limit in the vicinity of your car barn and if memory serves me correctly, 15mph for your streets where the trams exit from the barn. Thank you very much, Trevor. I have had a look at the two websites. Your information on speed limits is very helpful. I will kepp you all posted about my progress.

Having worked in the road sign industry over a few years of my career the road signs shown on the websites are actually quite modern and most appear in the current Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Speed signs around the 60's were black on white and in MPH not KPH and certainly did not have the red roundel. There is little information I have ever been able to find on the internet so I guess a transport museum or perhaps a main roads department may be able to assist. I have seen the odd photo of a road sign in old photos from the period but not enough to build a catalogue, it is wise to point out that in those days each state had their own designs.Robyn |
