Hi All.    I couldn’t make it out, I had a step between the frogs and track. Was it down to me? No one I had asked about knew what I meant, or didn’t want to admit it. Until today that is, and now the horse has bolted? I have been given an alternative to Peco I R J ‘s. When one lays point with live frogs( redip redip) instead ofusing IRJ’s ,place a piece of 20 thou plastikard between the frog and the rail , pin down the track.  Before ballasting , remove the plastikard and fill the gap with Milliput ( terracotta). But I don’t know where to get the stuff, without going online.Best wishes Kevin .

Hi Kevin some  Hobbycraft stores stock milliput and you can also try the likes of screwfix, homebase. or B&Q for there own brand two part epoxy putty, (Plumbers use it)  It might be slightly more grainy but would do what you want. Most of them are white though I think, so you would need to colour it afterwords.Trying to think what else I've heard used in place of plastic IRJ's but the mind is not playing ball tonight  :roll:

Kevin, why not just use Peco insulated rail joiners?  You don't need to be messing about with bits of Plastikard and Milliput just to join your track.  You are making life difficult for yourself.

Kevin, I have read your initial post again.  Am I right to assume that you mean that there is a step between the frog end of the point and the adjoining length of track?  This difference might be because you are using track from different manufacturers.  I use Peco points with C&L track.  The sleepers of the points are thicker that those of the track.  Therefore, I usually glue a thin piece of card under the end of the track to bring the rail height up to the same level as the point.  If you are using the points and track from the same manufacturer, i.e. Peco, check that you are using the same code for both track and points.  For instance, make sure you haven't bought a code 75 point and code 100 track, or the other way round.  If they are the same, check that you haven't driven in the track pins too hard thereby allowing slight differences in height between the rail ends.  If you have, ease out the track pins until the rail heights match.

Hi Terry. Thank you for your reply. Yes definitely Peco code 75 Track, points and IRJ’s 100%. I could not believe it either, mind you it is a very slight step but noticeable. As it happens I have purchased a length of code 100 and the joiners etc but they are awaiting another project/experiment . Best wishes. Kevin

Kevin, while IRJ's may slip onto the rail of the frog, they will not onto flex track without a bump in the rail unless you cut away the sleeper.

Hi Ron.  Thank you for your reply. Strange as it sounds, it is true, and the IRJ slotted in on both sides of the joint. i must admit most Modellers would agree with you, but, I have found another modeller that has witnessed this fault, the very man who has suggested this solution.   Best wishes   Kevin

Occasionally, the IRJ, being very thin and flexible plastic, can be a bit difficult to slot on properly.  It's not uncommon to find that the bits designed to slip onto the rail web end up under the bottom of the rail creating a slight bump.  It's also quite difficult to see the problem - unless you have excellent eyesight.

Additionally Kevin, I presume you realise joiners, metal and IRJ, for Code 75 rail are different from those for Code 100 ......... :roll:  Is there a possibility you've mixed the two up ?

Hi Petermac.  Thank you for your reply.  Yes I understand everything that you are saying. I haven’t purchased any code 100 IRJ’s all the code 100 stuff is awaiting my attention for another project. The code 75 IRJ’s did slip on the ends of the rails without any problem and the baseboard was/is level.     Best wishes. Kevin
