The Wallows is a portable layout set in the Black Country an area once described as “red by night and black by day” where furnaces lit the night sky and smoke hid the sun during the daylight hours. In certain corners of the Black Country, behind forbidding wastelands, or at the bottom of unkempt lanes far from the beaten track that generally end up in a no-man's-land of former industrial occupations, you might still come across a relic or two created in the great age, the age that witnessed the profile of the Dark Region being raised to an unprecedented level as it became the beating heart of Britain’s Industrial manufacturers. The area just to the north of the Dudley-Brierley Hill road is known as The Wallows, and was very much the centre of the Pensnett Railway. The model has been designed to include some of the features of the area such as the Harts Hill Iron Works, Old Park Engineering and of course the inevitable pub a feature that has become the signature building of all my previous Earl of Dudley based layouts. The Baseboards are commercial products from Grainge and Hodder, track work is scratch built as are the structures whilst the electrics and controls are analogue. The first photo is of what will form the view blocker on the fiddle yard canal-side factories based on those on the Stourbridge Canal. ![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

Lovely work Mike, the setts have come out well, as have the houses, especially the one with the boxed window. cheers Marty ____________________ Marty N Gauge, GWR West Wales Newcastle Emlyn Layout. Newcastle Emlyn Station is "Under construction" |

That looks very good. Below is my small O gauge layout at its 2nd exhibition at Caulfield Melbourne Australia in August last year. I have been to several others since. It is called 'Filching Rd Yard'. It is 2.4m (8') x 450mm (1'6"). It was built over 9 months. It is Dc control as a friend has DC control on his large 45'x20' layout. So that is the way it has to stay for now. It fits in the back of my station wagon with every thing I need to take including operators (x2). ![]() |

The last of the canal side factories basic structure awaiting detailing. Not having a good day in the workshop as the hands are playing up, but I'm at least getting somewhere. Poor photo taken against the light with my phone. ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

Just spent some time in the gentlemens retreat ( the workshop) drilling 180 small holes and fitting 180 straight pins to represent roof bolts. I really need to get out more or perhaps enjoy a large G&T instead. However, the buildings now need painting so maybe a large G&T is not such a good idea and my dermatitis is considerably worse. :(![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

Buildings for The WallowsThe basic painting is done but the final finishing and glazing will have to wait. The pins used were dress makers pins quietly removed from my wifes sewing basket, shhhh not a word.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

Exit stage right, OK., exit to fiddle yard. Just a trial bodge up to see if my cunning plan actually will work. Shoved a couple of bits of ply to act as canal level and tried the Joey/BCN Day boat I've just started work on just for effect.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

The back of an envelope and a couple of photos sort of modelling has progressed the joey which is now slowly taking shape. Stern post to finish, towing posts to make and fit, rudder to be assembled and fitted and an awful lot of tidying up before putting into primer![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

Having been told that the cabin is completely wrong I've taken the saw to it and reduced the cabin length, height and angled the sides in more. It's better than it was but far from perfect. Unfortunately more drastic surgery could have resulted in damage to the hull. Still needs weathering and a load fitted. It can then be fixed onto the board and mooring lines fitted. ![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |

It looks excellent, Mike. I used curtain pulls for mooring lines. They come in various thicknesses and have a look of woven hawsers. ____________________ Max Port Elderley |

Beautiful layouts, chaps! I do so love British Industrial O gauge. I've got every intention of doing something like this myself one day, so I just soak up any and all threads like this that I see. Wonderful! |

Layout all set up ready to play a couple of things to do like fitting the fireproofed drapes and fixing a dry joint. Pictures from an exhibition, no not the theme tune of Jonathan Creek, but from Solihull on Saturday. Layout ran well and only needs a couple of tweaks before it's next outing at Warley . Special guest operator my 8 year old Granddaughter stole the show, shunting a couple of wagons and entertaining several visitors whose young off-spring where green with envy. . I know that the theme tune was actually Danze Macabre.)![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New apprentice hard at work r ![]() ![]() ____________________ 'Twor Mee Iday Doit' (Black Country Latin) |
