Hi All. I am not criticising anyone in particular. But, following a recent visit to a local electronics outlet as outlined in a recent thread. When the shop staff are so willing to assist customers, but, don't know how to help thec customer, then something is wrong with society. Is there such a rapid staff turnover?? That staff replacements do not get sufficient training before going onto the shop floor. Anyone that goes into a shop and knows exactly what the want is okay, but, new customers come along and either get the palmed off with the stuff that is obsolete or just useless . Then that customer may give up and move on? All the best. Kevin ____________________ Staying on the thread Kevin. |

Hi Kevin, The customer staff are there primarily to sell, all they need to know is how to stock the shelves and run the check-out. It all comes prepacked anyway. Electronic components especially. There are still some specialist shops around where the owners knows the ins and outs. Most of these you meet only at shows, many don't have shop front stores and most do mail-order/on-line. Sign of the times. I get almost 100% of what I need on-line. Which of course means you have to know exactly what to order. Nigel ____________________ ©Nigel C. Phillips |

Hi Nigel. Thank you, I buy so much on line too. Why if it wasn't for online buying I would spend most of my waking hours on trains going to model shops. But this time it was the question of 1mm or 1.5mm shrink tubing.Maybe it would have been best to phone the online dealer first?? All the best. This morning in Hobbycraft [I know, but free parking instead of Multi-storey nightmare...]buying Humbrol Acrylic I struggled to choose a colour with the pots all mixed up. As it was, I've come home with gloss instead of satin... At the checkout I asked why they no longer had free Humbrol colour charts to take away... " 'Cos they are on-line now...." " But that means I've got to use expensive printer ink to have one as a reference..." "Oh yeah..." "and beside, each printer prints a slightly different colour..." "yeah, I suppose, yeah, no, but, but you could save ink by printing it out in black and white...." I still don't know if she was extracting the bladder-water! Hi Doug. Thank you for your reply. I know what you mean, I printed a lot of Peco Electrofrog points from their website and realised afterwards that my printer had the wrong setting. Which meant I had wasted my effort. After that I scanned the polnts that I had. All the best. Kevin

Training ... Private company...Does not compute. Having been in the military Where there was proper training I have found all the companies I have worked for since (5) Do as little training as possible. We get training here, all to do with equal opertunities / or the in house style of working. Absolutley nothing that would help with doing your job. ____________________ Now I've finally started a model railway...I've inherited another... |

Hi The Q. Thank you for your reply.. I retired before the commencement of the 21st Century. There cannot be any room for staff training it would seem now, and I was shocked when I heard about Zero Hours working. It is all about the bottom line, on the balance sheet( not VPL)![]() ![]() ____________________ Staying on the thread Kevin. |

The scary bit is that those items that do not have the appropriate ROI will get dropped. Plan ahead for at least 5 years, buy 'em while you can. Also plan on doing more things yourself - that 3D printer, metal etching (or at least the design, doesn't need CAD), white metal casting, resin casting. Never too late to learn a new skill. I'm with Q on the training. What most employees get theses days is not training as it relates to customers, it's all about the "Company" and optimizing internal procedures that minimize cost. Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. Last Saturday I nearly, very nearly purchased my " Man Cave". But until then I'll have to wait. I did however get another Loco , a very small " 0-6-0 the Hornby Terrier" in SE& CR livery, but I will give it a good work out on DC before I fit a Decoder . Kevin
