I have recently installed a Peco LK-55 Turntable together with a proprietary indexing kit. The indexing components are good quality and comprise a photo cell activated by a serrated disc, giving access to ten in/out roads. The turntable bridge rotates both clockwise and anticlockwise but because of inherent backlash in the drive gearbox the indexing to the roads can vary by up to 3mm and the bridge when indexed to a road can wander within this 3mm discrepancy. I'm sure this problem is not new, but can anyone offer a solution.

Hi Robin, If it's the kit I'm thinking of the motor/gearbox supplier was recently changed. 3mm (0.12") is a lot of backlash for a gear-head motor, especially if it's a planetary gear design (zero backlash). Could this be a mechanical issue? (slop in the brass bracket holders, loose grub screws on the shaft holder, binding of the bridge support wheels, well wall distortion as it goes around, the whole turntable moving around in it's hole)? Do you see this degree of movement with an empty, unloaded turntable? Gearhead motors suffer from lateral torsion due to the output shaft not being concentric with the motor shaft, hence the need for bullet-proof bracing of the motor and the turntable to prevent movement. Thanks Nigel. I think I can discount the mechanical issues. There is minimal (but necessary) backlash at the gearbox but this still translates to 3mm slop at the edge of the bridge, and in my view indexing has to be accurate and positive otherwise you might just as well rely on manual control.

Hi Robin, Sounds like it's not fit for intended purpose (and not a planetary gearhead). And one of those situations where sending it back could get expensive. 3mm slop is unfortunately is a derailing issue. Nigel ____________________ ©Nigel C. Phillips |

Many years ago now my solution to the non availability of a UK motorised turntable, and let alone a turntable of any sort other than in kit form, I used to convert the Flieschmann turn tables into something that looked convincingly British. I also managed to convert one to take an O gauge white metal 0-6-0 tank engine although it did struggle somewhat with the sudden unexpected and inconsiderate weight imposed upon it ! In return for this however, and no doubt by way of protest, it did eject fine wisps of smoke that freely spiralled up majestically from the motor department when turning a loco but not enough to alert the fire brigade. I have recently built the same turntable while experimenting with various motors I came to the conclusion rather than get disheartened quickly as the fiddling about was tedious I will wait for the dedicated motor to be released by Peco later this year I can afford to wait as my layout is really a small working diarama it will be interesting to see if this solves an age old topics on the LK-55 turntable found on many forums. ![]() ____________________ DCC NCE Powercab 00 009 & 009 society member |

Hi Michael, Take a look at the Locomotech system and check out the installation with Gold Coast Model Railway: http://www.locomotech.com/ Following reseach, this is the one I'll be using with a £15 Peco turntable from ebay, bashed into GWR shape with a little help from Dapol Bill ____________________ At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born ![]() |

I have seen that one, it knocks spots off side mounted plastic cog setups,so the weight of the motor is acting as a pull down on the bridge part ?? That is what is needed, so do the arms pivot it in position so as not to jam the turntable? Are they adjustable? If the Peco one is ever released it would need to be weighty to do the same job I will keep an eye on this thread and will be interested in how it gets on. By the way I read somewhere that the Peco one will have some means of programming in DCC various positions on the turntable regards Mike April 2018 just installed a Locomotech motor for the peco turntable brilliant really smooth and hooked up to DCC a sinch! ____________________ DCC NCE Powercab 00 009 & 009 society member |
