This one's called 'Phairns Castle' named after Carsphairn in Dumfries and Galloway where we go for a week during june/july. There was no plan, just an excersise in how big a castle I could build before I couldn't lift it ! Allan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That looks brilliant Allan - right up to your usual standard. ![]() ![]() you'll be telling us next you built it whilst waiting for the kettle to boil .................. ![]() ![]() I presume it's 7mm Scale - how big and heavy is it and does it have a "skeleton" or is it just sheets of plasticard ? I'm also interested in the bay window structures. Are they also plastic and what about the mullions ? ____________________ 'Petermac |

Petermac wrote: That looks brilliant Allan - right up to your usual standard. Hi Peter, and great to see you back on the horse ! Yes, it is 7mm Scale and it's heavy - very ! The skeleton, or carcass as I call it, is all 2mm industrial grey cardboard held together with superglue for instant adhesion. I literally use gallons of it but don't pay model shop or D.I.Y prices for it ! The bay windows are built up out of 40thou styrene as seperate units with added moulding cut from Evergreen metal siding sheets. These are then coloured with Colron dye then dusted over with talc whilst the dye is still wet. The mullioned windows are cut out of the same stone sheeting and reversed, coloured, then glued back into the opening from where they were cut out from. This ensures a 100% fit. I also do this for lintels above doors and windows and sometimes stone type window cills. The window frames are cut out as one piece from 20thou styrene. BTW, when cutting through those 80thou Wills stone sheets you really are going to need a heavy duty Stanley knife fitted with a heavy duty Draper blade as an ordinary modellers scapel will just snap. I say Draper blade because you can get 200 for a fiver off Ebay and they last ten times longer than Stanley's own. In fact, I use a Stanley knife loaded with a heavy duty blade for everything from the finest detail to the heaviest cuts. After all, a point is a point is a point. I'll put up a few pictures later of the finished job then in a few weeks time we're off to Scotland for a break where I'll be photographing the castle again but against a natural back ground. Hope that helps. Cheers. Allan. |

All rather good but will you please stop showing us photos of the real thing? I've just spent a month in the UK and come across more than one castle and gatehouse looking for all the world like a kit and far less realistic than these models! ____________________ Rick Layouts here and here |

Ed wrote: What about the other end of the scale Allan, ever done anything in N gauge/2mm or smaller? Actually Ed yes, N gauge when I first started and could see what I was doing. It was a disaster in Farish loco's and N gauge buildings and not much has changed since ! This was surrendered to 4mm, Triang loco's and stock, Superquick and another disaster. Finally got got hold of John Ahearns " Miniature Building Construction " and started to get results. About 30 years later O gauge followed hard on the heals of an appointment with an optition and the aquisition of a pair of NHS bi-focals. This led to Gauge 1 but a stronger pair of glasses a few years later saw the way back to O gauge and I reckon that's the way it'll stay now. Cheers. Allan. |
