Thank you for accepting my application. I have been Railway Modelling for over 50 years and have had the most pleasure from early days of Tri-ang Hornby when saving pocket money to buy a wagon or coach was the main objective. Always encouraged by my parents and big Brother resulted in a life-time (so far) of interest. Living in Leeds when younger we could hear the trains pound the iron road from Headingley, through Horsforth, making their way to Harrogate and beyond. My Brother and I regularly went train spotting at Leeds (City) and Leeds (Central) before its closure. Also at various locations along the routes north. First Train set was the Pullman set with Britannia and three Pullman coaches. This was followed by The Freightmaster with Green Brush Type 2 and seven wagons. Then came the Intercity with Blue Class 37 and three Intercity Coaches - with lights! Progress was rapid in layout building during full time working years when spare/disposable income was available. Had a number of layouts during those years all designed to maximise space. In 2008 I suffered a severe medical condition from which I had life-saving surgery. Aortic Dissection is usually a fatal condition, but I was a lucky man, working in the local Hospital when it occurred and then transferred by emergency ambulance for immediate open heart surgery. This vascular condition is, generally, only ever found as a cause of death, and is certainly a silent killer. The results of this left me very confused and had an effect on my mental capacity so I had to retire from my work. I worked for the Police for 32 years latterly in a Senior capacity for Technical Surveillance responsible for the installation of miniature covert audio and video systems. I also commissioned the communications equipment on the new Force Helicopter. Now retired I help my friend with his business interests and take the role of "maker" of miniature model Lamps for our railway modelling friends. In my spare time I enjoy the role of Church Warden at our local Parish Church, play the piano for relaxation and have written songs both secular and sacred from pop to hymn tunes! I now live in beautiful rural East Yorkshire and drive a Jaguar XJ6 which is just fabulous! Currently I have four layouts on the go, in differing stages of construction; a small MPD for steam locos (DC - probably will convert to DCC), a 6' x 10" shunting layout "Chester Road" (DCC), a garden shed layout in the process of construction (DC & DCC), and three bare boards, each 4' x 2' which will be an exhibition quality layout (DCC), terminus to sector plate or traverser. I am hoping to share this build in the YMRC Forum. Attachment: J94 cab.jpg (Downloaded 14 times) |

Hi Alan, Thank you for the very warm welcome to YMRC. Happy New Year. I'm sorry, I haven't posted for some time due to ongoing health issues but, thankfully, things have improved greatly and I am now back in circulation! I am re-educating myself on the forum & pages and how to work it! I have been invited to a very small local Exhibition with "Chester Road" (pics in Gallery). This is to be at a place called Wetwang (yes, it does exist!) and is in aid of the newly formed Yorkshire Wolds Railway Trust who have a small operating line near the route of the former NER at Fimber. They are in the VERY early stages of inception, opened last year to much acclaim. The never ending difficulty with acquiring land is an ongoing battle for them although there are, fortunately, some generous investors who helped get them going. The Exhibition is in March this year and the venue is a typical Village Hall affair with basic facilities. I will be taking Chester Road on its first outing. There is also interest from the Scarborough & District Railway Modellers and the Bridlington Railway Modellers. The build of my next layout I will endeavour to photograph as I go along. This will be the exhibition standard layout I mentioned in the intro. A location has yet to be decided but I am leaning very much towards the once mooted "North Frodingham Light Railway" a proposed but never built Railway from Beverley (and possibly Driffield) to North Frodingham. North Frodingham is a rural hamlet of minimal size. However, when the Railway was proposed it was found that earthworks and obstacles (including low-lying marshes and numerous crossing points of the tributaries to the River Hull) would not be financially viable. The main trade usage was envisaged to be agricultural supplies, grain and feed, cattle, and pigs. As motor transport gained in popularity, and roads were improved, it was found that the merchandise could be more easily be transported by road between the market Town of Driffield, where a Station, Goods Yard and Cattle dock already existed existed, and from where "Bradshaws" grain merchants had hold and "Barkers" feed merchants were already distributing their goods. My layout would form the supposed continuation from North Frodingham to Beeford with a tenuous link to a through Station to Hornsea. This would enable me to run NE stock including later DMUs with a Service from Driffield to Hornsea supposed. That's the plan, any way! All the best, and I'll be back before long. Cheers, Bob |

Hi Robert - for some reason, I missed your initial posts so a belated welcome from France. ![]() I too remember Leeds during the days of both City and Central stations. We lived there when my father came out of the army. What was initially planned to be a "temporary" stay, lasted just under 10 years !!! We, or rather he, had a great friend (also ex army) living in Lincolnshire and when we visited him, it was often by train from Leeds Central. Although we had a car, roads were not what they are today and laterly, fuel rationing during the Suez crisis made motoring for pleasure, almost a no-no. I loved those old, warm comfortable ex LNER carriages - sometimes even the odd Gresley teak would appear in usually, brown livery rather than varnished - or maybe, to a small boy, they were just old and dirty ............. Driffield is a town I knew well during the 60's and 70's and place names such as Wetwang and Fimber (near Sledmere ?) remind me of a mispent youth travelling to Scarborough on a Saturday night to a disco called "Scene One" !! I had no idea there was a Yorkshire Wolds Railway Trust but had read somewhere of interest in opening a line from, I think, Market Weighton towards Malton maybe via Driffield ????? ![]() Your plethora of layouts will make interesting threads - do tell/show us more. ____________________ 'Petermac |
