Looking at making a small inglenook type layout to go in my lounge thinking of using a reptile vivarium has anyone done this or tried as looking in to the viability in using one? |

I can't see why you can't do it. As long as you can still get inside for cleaning of rails and for rerailing stock it should be ok. Cheers, Gary. |

Maybe make the layout on a removable base to make it easier to work on... Or is that stating the bleedin' obvious! I can just imagine trying to scenic around the edges is going to be a right pain if the glass is in the way. Marty |

Why not build your own case out of clear perspex ? You can have any size or design you like and, as it glues easily with the proper glue, you don't need any corner framing. |

Ah, still could be tricky working inside the restricted space, especially around the edges, I did something similar with a module but had access from above and all of the front. I made the module out of 3mm or 5mm MDF, I can't remember which, probably 5mm. Cheap as chips, light weight and surprisingly strong.  It ended up like this....  Just a thought. Thanks for the suggestions I've got to have something that matches the rest of the furniture or I'm not allowed a railway in the lounge as you can get matching stands with cupboard to go under to hide tools and mags and stuff in to keep her happy Plus with all in closed in was thinking the dust would be kept at bay and tiny hand at bay and cats lol |

Hmmmm re Petermac's suggestion...you can get some quite BIG aquariums you know ...wife , kids , cat. Probably even soundproof it |

A vivarium approach would be restrictive in my opinion. Marty's one is good in that the front and top are still open. I like that having it enclosed will mean it will not accumulate dust/fluff so quickly! Like keeping hi-fi, books, DVDs etc in a cabinet with glass doors rather than an open shelf unit. So, I think there is for and against with the idea. Even with my hoisted layout it'll have panels around that can be removed so it does not seem so enclosed when using it, at least on the front edge the side will be removeable. Steve |

Bought myself a little something for my lounge railway in n gauge and getting a custom made vivarium that 4 foot by 18 inch by 2 foot tall with glass sliding front that's lift out and will have a cut in Glass panel on top for veiwing |

Hmm, difficult to see without any reference to scale tbh, but it may well serve, but will need weathering. Concrete simply doesn't stay pristine for very long and will also have plenty of formwork (mould) lines, in accordance with the construction sequence (may not matter so much in 'N') and some subtle colour variation between batches. I've often mixed talcum powder with paint to replicate concrete in OO gauge. It's also good to see that you're forging ahead now Stuart and the move to N gauge will certainly give you the extra space you need, as well as some modelling challenges. Well order has been placed for a custom vivarium with additional glass panel in the top for viewing as well as the front sliding pair Hopefully it will be here in 3 weeks but could take 6 |
