Whilst on the subject of ballasting, I took a few handfuls of garden earth., warmed that in the microwave( choose the right moment)   Applied pva to the track surface then passeed the fine earth through a sieve to form the bases of the track surround .
Then marked where the track would sit ,put masking tape in place ,painted on a pva mix .  ballasted between the masking tape ,then pushed the track down into the ballast . wiggle it a bit in order to make the track sit down firmly . Remove the masking take while the pva is still wet If necessary hold the track in place with mapping pins  or similar.  Post number118 on the Blossom hill layout will show the finished job.  We all have our favorite method ,this works for me ,and is a fast way of doing a boring job.
