I found this site whilst browsing today, As we have many members from abroad or members who may want to model a UK region that they are not familiar with I thought it may be useful, and it gives explanations as to why styles of construction prevail in various regions.

It could help you avoid plantingf a northern grit-stone built house next to a Kentish clapboard building just because you like the look of the model on offer, but, hey! If rule 1  ['It's my railway'] rules, go ahead.
